How to stick to Dry January as a student in Notts
Tips that don’t involve joining a run club x
After a December filled with mulled wine, eggnog, and Baileys, many of us are currently attempting to embark on a drier January.
However being in a city infamous for its nightlife, Dry January can prove to be extremely difficult for many. The temptation of a CRISIS Wednesday or an Ocean Friday is all too strong – especially the later into January it gets.
With exam season in full swing, starting the year off sober has never been more appealing, so here are my top tips to stick to Dry January in Notts.
Mocktails
Just because you’re not drinking this month, doesn’t mean you have to give up going out.
Some of the best bars in Notts offer mocktail alternatives of all their classic concoctions, meaning you can still enjoy a fun night out without the raging hangover and crippled bank balance the next day.
My personal favourites are Pepper Rocks, and any of the Bunks located around the city centre.
Brunch
This January we’re swapping drinks for brunches.
Everyone’s heard of bottomless brunch but what about bottomless tapas? Las iguanas is currently offering a January deal for their bottomless tapas at only £15 pp (I’m just a girl who loves a bargain).
Nottingham is home to a variety of the most amazing brunch spots. If you haven’t tried it already, the Pudding Pantry does a brilliant full English.
For something a little more sweet, the ‘build-your-own’ pancake stack will be right up your street.
If you want somewhere a bit more casual, Fox Café is the perfect place to catch up with friends over a smoothie and a hot panini before the reality of term two sets in.

Wholesome Activities
If you’ve had enough of food and drink alternatives, use the extra cash you’re saving by saying no to shots and say yes to activities.
Now’s the perfect time to chill with your housemates without the pressure of spending all your money on a night out you might not even remember.
Some popular places include Ice-skating at Motorpoint arena, bowling and mini golf at Discobowl Notts, Axe throwing at Axed Nottingham, and karaoke at Roxy Ballrooms.
Nottingham has a variety of activities you can do, with many of them offering student discounts – it’s the perfect city to try something new and potentially pick up a hobby for the new year.
Reconnect with nature
Dry January is a great excuse to check out some of the lovely green spaces we have in Nottingham, especially now that you’re not nursing a hangover and have a bit more time over the weekend.
Instead of rotting on sofa after a questionable night out with the greasiest takeaway you can find, now is the time to get out and explore – regret free.
I’d recommend exploring High-field park or Wollaton Park to escape the stresses of uni and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.
There are plenty of things to do in Nottingham Sober, so whether you’re trying out sobriety for a month, opting to save a bit more money this year, or just not a fan of alcohol, there will be something for everyone.
