People find the ‘true psycho’ of Squid Game 2 after realising he didn’t even need the money
Justice for Thanos!
The Shaman might be annoying, and Thanos might have been drugged up most of the time, but the “true psychopath” of Squid Game season two was undoubtedly the latter’s right-hand thug, Nam-gyu.
Much like his purple-haired bestie, Nam-gyu (Player 124) was a new character introduced in season two of Netflix’s Squid Game. But while Thanos has received a lot of flack for his lack of morals and penchant for bouts of violence, Nam-gyu’s psycho behaviour has flown under the radar as he is reduced to a mere side character.
Thanos, played by the equally as controversial T.O.P, might have been the brains behind their operation, but Nam-gyu relished in the overt violence considerably more than his friend. He was violent, manipulative, and cruel, and though Thanos met a grisly end at the end of the show, Nam-gyu is still very much alive.
Squid Game’s Nam-gyu just loved the violence
A major theme in Squid Game is the class disparity in South Korea and the prevalence of debt, which in turn leads the desperate people to accept their fate in the Squid Game. For Nam-gyu, his debt was racked up from foolishly investing in a cryptocurrency called Dalmatian on the advice of the YouTube channel MG Coin. After it failed, he lost ₩300 million.
But, as someone on Reddit pointed out, Nam-gyu didn’t even need to stay in the competition that long, explaining: “Nam-gyu is so much darker when you realize he only had 300 million debt yet he still wanted to keep playing the games even after having enough. A true psychopath.”

As we know, each player in Squid Game is worth ₩100 million, and after the Red Light, Green Light, game, each player could have walked away with ₩24 million. By the Mingle game, which happened in episode four, Nam-gyu would have returned home ₩356 million, meaning he would have had some left over.
So, why did he stay in Squid Game? That would be a generous mix of good old-fashioned greed and his apparent blood lust. If Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk is reading this, please kill Nam-gyu in season three.
