Squid Game creator shockingly admits the real reason he decided to brutally kill Thanos

Gone too soon?

I won’t lie I really wasn’t expecting Thanos to die when he did in Squid Game, and when we were first introduced to his character I almost thought he might survive until season three.

However as we all know that wasn’t the case, and Thanos ends up getting stabbed in the neck with cutlery of all things whilst the players start fighting amongst themselves.

Whilst it might have seemed like a very sudden and unexpected death, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the real reason why he decided to kill off Thanos.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creator revealed: “As for Thanos… he’s one of my favourite characters, too! I believe that was the right time to see him off.

“Although I will admit, I do think the death was sudden. It was very intense, which was the right way at just the right time for him to go.

“The way he leaves the story, if you watch until the third season, it will almost feel as if he’s still there in some ways in terms of how he affects the plot.”

It seems his decision to cast the rapper in the role has caused some controversy, but the creator previously touched upon why he was the right guy for the role.

In an interview with PEOPLE, he explained: “As you may know, the actor Seung-hyun, about nine years ago got involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea and wasn’t able to do any projects for the past nine years in Korea.

“And so this is a comeback after quite a long hiatus, and particularly because he portrays a character that’s a rapper and also someone who is on drugs.”

He continued: “I feel that it took him a lot of guts, in a way, to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too. So I think it took him a lot of courage to take on that role.

“Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character.”

In another interview before the show was released, the creator explained that whilst he knew it was a “controversial” decision to cast him, he felt he was the “best fit” for the role.

He said: “He showed a lot of effort and talent… and I personally had paid a lot of attention to him as an actor.” He added: “I personally thought this actor was the best fit for me.”
