The ultimate guide to conquering Dry January as an Edi uni student
Is Edinburgh even worth it if I can’t split the G? (Probably)
Taking on Dry January as a student in Edinburgh might sound daunting—but cutting out alcohol doesn’t mean cutting out seeing your friends and enjoying yourself. Whether you’re craving a post-library treat or looking for a new way to socialise, we’ve got you covered with this ultimate guide to navigating a booze-free month in style
1. Pubs aren’t off limits
First and foremost, dry January doesn’t mean giving up on pubs. This is your reminder that it is possible to watch a rugby game without a pint in hand with plenty of pubs offering excellent non-alcoholic options.
If you need help distracting from the call of a pint, I recommend getting involved in a pub quiz or any other traditional pub games. It’s amazing how wrestling with your lack of general knowledge and getting competitive with your fellow pub-goers can distract you from the fact you’re not drinking. 2. Explore the city by foot
This may seem obvious but going on a walk is a great way of getting out of the library, out of your flat and reducing your stress levels as the term goes on. Yes, it will be freezing and yes, you’ll need your scarf, hat and gloves, but grab a hot coffee and get out there. Edinburgh has so many beautiful walks. Move out of your area, out of George Square and discover somewhere new, whether that be with a friend or by yourself. Listen to a podcast, set your 2025 Spotify listening activity to a good start or walk and talk.

Recommendations include: The Crags, not quite the climb of Arthur’s Seat but in many ways just as good. The highly underrated Blackford Hill just south of Marchmont, which offers a different perspective of Edinburgh. If you can drive, or fortunately your flatmate is up for chauffeuring for the day, the Pentlands is just a short drive away and has the added chance of a meeting with highland cows.
3. Explore the city’s coolest mocktail bars
Cocktail bars in Edinburgh are notoriously expensive and as students it’s highly likely you’ve kept your distance, but mocktails are equally delicious and often half the price. It’s the perfect opportunity to soak up the decor without breaking the bank. Try places like The Blackbird, Home Bar and The Raging Bull.
4. Head to the cinema
Trade the pints for popcorn. The Cameo Picturehouse, just ten minutes from the library, is a century old cinema that shows a great mix of independent and blockbuster films. Join their Under 25s club or student membership for affordable tickets and some great perks.
5. Have a bowling night
Channel your inner child or embody Jeff Bridges’ The Dude with a nostalgic night of bowling. Grab a group of friends (or go solo if you’re feeling bold and want some practice) and enjoy a post-library stress relief. It’s a quirky alternative to a typical night out and will leave you with a far greater adrenaline high than any alcohol can provide. There’s the choice of Tenpin at Fountain Park, Roxy Lanes on Rose Street or Lane7 in St James’ Quarter.
6. Devour a discounted pizza
Franco Manca have their £5 pizza deal back on from January 6th to 31st. It’s almost like they are rewarding us Dry January goers. Although it might be a betrayal to the beloved Civernos, it’s good to branch out and swap the New York style for the Italian sourdough. Just sign up on its website or use its UNiDAYS deal, which includes a soft drink with any of the classic pizzas.
7. Laugh it off
This one is a must. Head to Monkey Barrel Comedy on a Monday night for a free evening of comedy. There’s a great mixture of amateurs and pros performing, and if you’re feeling brave, why not get on stage and take one of their open mic spots.
8. Get creative
Ditch the screens and embrace your artistic side. There’s plenty of budget and beginner friendly activities around Edinburgh. Why not paint some pottery at Doodles in Marchmont, try out Life drawing at Summerhall (its next event is tomorrow, the 14th of January) or go explore the Summerhall or National Gallery exhibitions. Letting go of one habit offers the perfect opportunity to find something new.
9. Sober clubbing
Lastly, there’s clubbing. Dry January doesn’t mean you need to stay in while your flatmates are out in Cowgate. In fact, going out sober can be a game changer. You’ll remember all your conversations, avoid embarrassing moments, and wake up without a hangover. Load up on Red Bulls, and you’ll be surprised how much fun you can have without the booze. Trust us—Cowgate will still deliver the vibes.
