Squid Game creator reveals the wild hidden meanings behind the show’s costumes

The truth behind the face masks is insane

Squid Game season two has been out for literally 24 hours and has already launched itself at first place on the Netflix top 10 charts. After phenomenal success in its first season, prompting Squid Game: The Challenge, MrBeast’s Beast Games and even a Squid Game rave, season two has come back with a bang. If you binge-watched the entire series already, you should probably get some sleep, but first, the Squid Games creator just revealed the hidden meanings behind the costumes in the show. Hold on, because they’re fascinating!

The uniforms are the same for all the players, with matching white T-shirts and white trainers. The only thing that makes them stand out from each other are the numbers that they have been assigned. What a way to hide everyone’s identity and make it an “equal opportunity,” as the Square leader said. This is also the same situation with the guards’ uniforms which are bright red jumpsuits along with masks that cover their true identities.

The staff jumpsuits weren’t the creator’s first choice

The show’s creator revealed how the jumpsuits weren’t his first choice for the staff: “At first, I wanted a boy scout-like outfit but it showed the men’s figures too well. It didn’t really make them look like ants in an ant colony. They needed to cover their entire body. And the best option to keep them anonymous was a jumpsuit. With a hoodie too, because they need to cover their faces.”

The face masks have a DOUBLE meaning

There are three different face masks used in Squid Game, which are a circle, triangle and a square. The different shapes represent letters of the Korean alphabet. Circles translate to the letter O, the triangle is part of the letter J and then squares symbolise M.

According to publication Looper OJM are the initials for the Korean name for the squid game, Ojingeo Geim. As well as this, it can also be said how the masks are signs on the Playstation controllers, which resemble the voting buttons and how the entire show feels like a game being controlled.

Red is the colour most associated with danger and intensity, and luckily for us, that comes in bundles in Squid Game season two.
