Glasgow Uni has ranked as one of the world’s most environmentally sustainable universities
The university continues to recognise that ‘urgent action is needed’ in regard to the environment
The University of Glasgow has been ranked as one of the world’s most sustainable unis.
That’s according to the newly released QS Sustainability University Rankings 2025, who have ranked the University 19th globally, based upon a number of factors surrounding ethical sustainability at educational institutions.
It was given an impressive overall score of 95.6 out of 100, second in Scotland to the University of Edinburgh, who achieved a score of 98.4, and seventh globally and third in the UK.
The three principle criteria that the rankings considered were Environmental Sustainability in which Glasgow scored 82, Environmental Education in which it scored 90.7, and Environmental Research, in which it scored an impressive 96.6.
The University of Glasgow says that it “recognises that the world is facing a climate emergency” and add that “urgent action is needed”.
The uni also aid that its Glasgow Green initiative “commits us to a very significant plan of action to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, with interim targets over the next decade”.
The new rankings mark a gradual improvement on the previous year’s performance, which the university say placed them 20th out of 1400 institutions globally.
Glasgow’s other educational institutions also featured on the list, with Strathclyde achieving a score of 85.2 and an overall global rank of 115th, which included a strong 91.8 for Environmental Research. Glasgow Caledonian also made it into the upper end of the table, with a global rank of 574th and an overall score of 58.3.
