Five festive things to do in Cardiff that aren’t just ice skating and the big wheel
Everyone in Cardiff knows about Winter Wonderland and the ice skating but what else is there to do in the city around Christmas time?
The festive season is almost upon us, with Cardiff even seeing its first sprinkle of snow. No doubt lots of Cardiff University students are already making Christmas plans, so we’re here to give you some ideas that you may not have thought about. So, put on your woolly hats and discover something new for the Christmas season.
1. Cardiff Christmas markets
Open from the 14th November – 23rd December, the Christmas market has something for everyone. With over 50 different stalls, there is bound to be something you’ll love. Whether it’s food stalls selling crepes or stalls selling candles and jewellery.
One that we know a lot of you would love is the Christmas bar, which sells beer, mulled wine, hot chocolate and more. Located in the main shopping streets in the centre, these markets run from 10am-6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-5pm on Sundays.
2. Cardiff Christmas Festival 2024
This one is for the theatre kids.
Something a bit different from the usual Winter Wonderland and ice skating, the Spiegel Theatre in Sophia Gardens holds live theatre shows towards the end of November and into December. The seated theatre is a wonder to see, with velvet chairs and mirrors all over.
One of the groups performing this year is Welsh of the West End (who you may have seen on BGT), who will sing live Christmas songs and musical theatre favourites.

If you’re looking for something away from the blistering cold outside, this may be the activity for you.
3. Wander through the arcades and shops
If you’re planning on doing your Christmas shopping early, head to St David’s shopping centre, where you’ll find just about everything. A lovely little Christmas shop in St David’s, called Rustic Charm, will catch your eye. The festive smell of cinnamon will lure you in every time you walk past. At least shopping will keep you warmer than sitting on the big wheel or ice skating.
For the Harry Potter lovers, walking through the decorated arcades makes it feel you are on Diagon Alley. The Royal Arcade and the Morgan Arcade have small independent shops all the way down, giving it more of a festive, homely feel.
4. Book a Christmas meal or club night with your housemates
Students are spoiled for choice when it comes to restaurants and bars in Cardiff, and there is nothing short of Christmas deals and club nights. Whether it’s SNOLO at the SU, Christmas package at Flight Club or a Christmas bottomless brunch at Slug and Lettuce, it’s guaranteed to be a lot of fun.
5. Festive walk through Bute Park
Wrap up warm and head to Bute Park between the 22nd November-31st December for the amazing light displays they have. Whether you go with your housemates or your partner, it’s guaranteed to be festive. Walk around, get the Instagram photos, head home and sit down with a Christmas film and a hot chocolate. We can’t think of anything better.
