The best activities you can do in Cardiff to get you in the Christmas spirit

It’s never too early to feel jolly!

Cardiff Christmas is not one to miss, and although your student accommodation may be cold and dark we’ve made a list of activities to keep you entertained this Christmas season. From going to the markets to simply cooking with friends, there is plenty to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas baking

Who doesn’t love a sweet treat? Now who doesn’t want to make them? We know, it can be an effort, but hear us out. There’s nothing more traditional than baking some sweets for Christmas.

Everyone knows that Father Christmas loves cookies, so they’re always a must. But if cookies aren’t to your fancy, then cupcakes, cakes, and brownies are always a shout.

A nice sweet treat will warm you right up during this cold period.

Cook a Christmas dinner

Now cooking a whole roast dinner in a university flat may be daunting, and it sure isn’t an easy task, but it is so worth it. The one in the image above was made by only one person and make it more challenging he was cooking for seven!

But, if everyone splits the workload and cost, cooking a Christmas dinner won’t be that expensive or that challenging.

To make it even more fun, you can easily add Christmas crackers and hats or incorporate “Secret Santa” alongside the meal.

Decorate your flat

If you’re not quite feeling the Christmas spirit then there’s only one thing to do: change your environment.

A Christmas tree is a classic, and always a delight to decorate. Lights, tinsel, and baubles. Plus, making your flat Christmas-esque is a fun experience.

If you don’t want to spend a ton of money on a tree though, there are cheaper ways to decorate your living spaces. You could for example draw out stockings to stick on the front of your doors, personalising them to yourself.

More cheap decorations include Christmas stickers and wrapping paper, which when put up, can make your windows and walls much brighter.

Go to the Cardiff Christmas Market

If you’re looking to relax, listen to Christmas music and enjoy the bustling world around you, then look no further than the Cardiff Christmas Market.

It’s always bustling during afternoons and evenings, and especially on the weekend. The illuminating and festive environment makes it a great place for both snacks and drinks. There is no better spot to bring a few mates and enjoy a mulled wine.

Make a gingerbread house

If you love decorating confectionary but can’t quite hack baking, then gingerbread houses are a great solution. Buy some icing, and you can make a masterpiece on your own kitchen counter.

Feeling inventive? You could easily draw upon one of your favourite shows. Why not make the cute cottage from The Holiday? Or make Halloween Town from The Nightmare Before Christmas?

You can easily turn decorating into a competition as well, getting your friends involved and ranking each other’s works.

Secret Santa

Do you enjoy giving and receiving presents? Do you not want to spend a load of money on all of your friends and housemates? Then Secret Santa is for you.

This cost-effective way of buying presents is by setting a low budget of £5-10 each. You’ll then randomly pull someone’s name out of a hat and anonymously give them presents. They can range from both personal to hilarious.

Visit Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland

Whether you’re looking for a great date spot, a place to go out with friends, or even by yourself. Cardiff Winter Wonderland is breathtaking. From fun games such as ring toss and darts, great food like wraps and burgers, and brilliant rides like a pirate ship and dodgems, the best part of all is the big wheel. Getting a great view of the surrounding city, it’s truly an amazing experience.

Make sure to just wrap up warm, as with it all being outside it can get pretty chilly.

Watch Christmas films

An amazing way to get in the Christmas spirit is by cozying up with a warm drink and watching a Christmas film. Fortunately there are plenty.

If you’re looking to reminisce about your childhood, then The Polar Express and Elf are some great shouts.

Prefer something more mature? Then Love Actually or The Holiday are perfect for you. With there being so many you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy.

Plus, even if you’re not a fan, they’re a great and easy watch to put on in the background whilst you get on with more important tasks.
