Ranking all of this year’s supermarket Christmas adverts from lame to actually good
Guess which one’s last
All of this year’s Christmas adverts are now out and as always, it’s the battle of the supermarkets.
John Lewis, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl, and Aldi are all competing for the best festive ad, but which one gets the top spot this year?
Here’s a complete ranking of all the 2024 ads from lame to actually good, with a few tear-jerkers mixed in there.
6. John Lewis
John Lewis was once known as the king of Christmas adverts, but now they’re bottom of the list. I mean really, what was this year’s lame ad? They call it a tear-jerker, but the strange story about a woman buying a Christmas present for her sister wasn’t emotional in the slightest. It was too confusing, there were way too many flashbacks and we were all waiting for a big moment at the end that never came. John Lewis, your reign is over.
5. Asda
Asda has enlisted the help of thousands of garden gnomes in their advert, which sees the little china ornaments come to life and help two employees get the store ready for the festive period. They stack the shelves, put up the tree, and cook the food in the ad, which puts a little smile on your face. However, it’s nothing special, and who really cares about gnomes apart from old people?
4. Aldi
Most Read
Kevin the Carrot and his friends return in this Aldi Christmas advert, obviously, and it’s just as funny as ever. The cheeky vegetable goes on a mission to get the festive spirit back after it was stolen by humbugs, those old-fashioned black and white sweets. Aldi never disappoints and always brings the comedic factor, but it’s a bit overdone now.
3. Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s teamed up with Roald Dahl’s character the BFG in this year’s advert, a lovely tale that sees the friendly giant help an employee get all the things she needs for the perfect Christmas dinner. Then, they gift it to a lovely family on Xmas morning. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, so gets third place.
2. Lidl
Just missing out on the top spot is Lidl. It’s short and simple but still manages to tug on your heartstrings with a beautiful story of two children. A little girl sees a boy who looks cold while she’s playing out in the snow, so when an old lady gifts her some magic bells and tells her to make a Christmas wish, she uses it to send him a Lidl hat on Christmas morning. Just adorable!
1. Tesco
This year, first place goes to Tesco. In the sweet advert, a man continues his grandmother’s tradition of making a gingerbread house at Christmas with his grandfather after she passes away. It’s not the biggest tear-jerker we’ve ever seen, but it does bring a tear to your eye and spreads the wholesome message of what Christmas is supposed to be about.
