A Cardiff University broadcast journalism student has been awarded a new creative scholarship by BAFTA.

Tom Hawkins, a Master’s student in JOMEC was awarded a BAFTA Tinopolis Scholarship for his degree.

The British Academy Film Awards announced £152,000 in scholarships to 22 students across the UK and the US, to support the study of students in Film, Journalism, Art and creative studies at a number of Universities.

The scholarship has helped nine students from the UK and 13 from the US.

Because of this, both sets of students each received £12,000 for their studies which will help to cover tuition fees and living costs.

BAFTA’s CEO Jane Millichip said: “Supporting the next generation of talent is an essential part of our mission. The BAFTA Scholarships provide access to learning and training for creatives and practitioners who are often denied careers in the screen arts because of socio and economic inequality.

“I am delighted to continue our Scholarship Programme thanks to our incredibly generous network of donors and supporters.”

In early October, Prince William held a speech at the BAFTA headquarters in London, expressing the importance of nurturing students’ talents.

The event was co-hosted with The Royal African Society, an organisation providing a “platform for people in the UK to access the brilliant creativity of African and African-heritage film-makers”.

Guests included recipients of the scholarship, as well as generous supporters and donors of the scheme. Also attending were several award-winning creatives, including Steven Merchant, Andy Serkis and Paul Greengrass.

BAFTA has been known for its generous scholarship schemes, providing funds for those pursuing a career in the arts.

The Prince of Wales said: “As President of BAFTA, I am very proud to be involved with an organisation that is dedicated to breaking down barriers for the storytellers of the future.

The charity is an industry leader in media and performance. They run regular masterclasses, lectures, and events that seek to inspire the new generation within the world of performance arts.
