It’s all a bit confusing, so how exactly is Alien: Romulus connected to Prometheus?

It’s about to get a bit gross

The newest Alien film in the franchise, Romulus, was released last week and there’s quite a lot of interconnected lore and links between this prequel and the other films. One of the biggest links in Romulus is to Prometheus, which was released in 2012 but is the very first film in terms of the Alien timeline.

Prometheus tells the story of the Engineers who created humans in the first place and delves further into how the Xenomorphs were created, showing how they spawn from a weird black goop. We see the return of the goo in Romulus after it’s extracted from a Xenomorph under the orders of Weyland-Yutani, who wants to use it on humans.

Near the end of the film, a pregnant Kay is forced to use the goo in order to heal herself from her injuries, but it ends up accelerating her pregnancy, resulting in a weird human-alien hybrid. This is very similar to what happens in Prometheus when Elizabeth ends up with an extremely accelerated pregnancy after having sex with Charlie, who has unknowingly become infected with the black goo. Elizabeth also gives birth to a weird alien, although it’s quickly disposed of.

In an interview with Variety,  director Fede Alvarez explained the overlooked connection between Alien: Romulus and Prometheus. He revealed: “I was hoping that people picked up the whole Engineer part of it. The black goo is the root of the whole thing that was introduced in Prometheus. It’s the root of all life, but also particularly the Xenomorphs come out of that thing, which means it has to be inside them.

“It’s the Xenomorphs’ semen, almost. So we thought, if it affects your DNA, and the Engineers clearly came out of the same root of life, it made complete sense to me that [the offspring of a human and a Xenomorph] was going to look like that. It’s probably a new species, because that mix never happened before.”

Sounds absolutely delightful.
