Raygun breaks silence on ‘devastating’ amount of hate she’s received for her breakdancing

‘I didn’t realise that would also open the door to so much hate which has frankly been pretty devastating’

Rachel Gunn, better known as Raygun has spoken out about the “devastating” amount of hate she’s received since her breakdancing performance at the Paris Olympics went viral.

Her performance quickly blew up and whilst most of the discussion centred around the hilarious memes, others started cruelly attacking her for even managing to get into the Olympics, and a petition has even been started against her.

Raygun has now broken her silence about her breakdancing performance and the fallout of it all for the first time since her Olympics performance. She started off by saying: “I wanted to start by thanking all the people who supported me. I really appreciate the positivity and was glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That’s what I hoped.”

She continued: “I didn’t realise that would also open the door to so much hate which has frankly been pretty devastating. I went out there and I had fun. I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off working for the Olympics. I gave my all, truly.

“I’m honoured to have been a part of the Australian Olympic team and breaking Olympic debut. What the other athletes have achieved has been phenomenal.” She pleaded to the media to “stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian breaking community and the broader street dance community Please respect their privacy.”

She also briefly addressed the online petition that has been launched against her, which currently has over 50,000 signatures. Whilst she didn’t speak directly about it, she referred people to the Australian Olympic Committee’s comments on the allegations.

Whilst there is no evidence, the petition claims that Raygun “manipulated the selection process to her own advantage”, with it asking for a public apology from her “for misleading the Australian public and attempting to gaslight the public and undermining the efforts of genuine athletes.”

The Australian Olympic Committee boss, Matt Caroll, called the petition “appalling” and “disgraceful”, saying in a statement: “It is disgraceful that these falsehoods concocted by an anonymous person can be published in this way. It amounts to bullying and harassment and is defamatory. We are demanding that it be removed from the site immediately.”
