It has risen four places since last year

The University of York has been ranked the 16th best university in the UK out of 130 universities ranked by The Complete University Guide’s latest rankings for 2024, maintaining its spot in the top 20.

The Complete University Guide’s overall score for each university is based on average calculated from a number of factors such as, graduate prospects, entry standards, student satisfaction, research quality and intensity, and student-staff ratio. York was given an overall score of 78 per cent, tying with the University of Southampton in 16th place, with both unis ranked one place below the Uni of Bristol and above Uni of Exeter.

York’s Roses rivals, the Uni of Lancaster, have been ranked 10th in the 2024 rankings, finding yet another way to outdo York after their Roses win back in April.

Looking to the subject rankings, York has been ranked joint 1st in the country for Dance, Drama & Cinematics, tying with the Uni of Exeter, and is in the top 10 across another three subject areas: Social Work (third), French (fourth), and Iberian Languages (fourth).

Nine more subjects ranked within the top 10: History of Art, Architecture and Design (sixth), Chemistry (seventh), English (seventh), Linguistics (eighth), Nursing (eighth), Archeology (eighth), Biological Sciences (eighth), Social Policy (ninth), and History (ninth).

The full report praised York’s “inspiring teaching” and “award-winning employability programme”. It also highlighted the uni’s “excellent social spaces” such as flexible learning spaces, bars, cafes, restaurants, theatres and a gallery, all which help create a sense of community in “a friendly, welcoming campus.”
