The York Tab is looking for writers and we want YOU

Come to our open meeting on October 10th

Are you an aspiring journalist? A hilarious writer? A jokes meme lord or a film-maker? If you are, The York Tab wants you to join our team.

The York Tab is a student news website run by students for students. Our open meeting is on October 10 (Thursday) at 6pm in the Spring Lane Building SLB/003. Everyone is welcome to come along, no experience required so bring your flatmates and friends to get involved.

If you’re unsure about what The Tab is, or how you can get involved, you’ll find all the information below:

What is The Tab?

The Tab is a student news site with over six million monthly readers. As a student writer, your stories will be shared on The York Tab Facebook page, to a readership of thousands of students – some of our best articles are shared across all of our pages including national, and can reach readers all over the country.

We break the biggest stories on campus. This past year, The York Tab has broken stories such as the Unity Health cancer scare, Club Salvos remaining open, plastic free stores opening in York and coverage of recent climate strikes and activism. We've also worked on stories such as the Tab 10x Campaign for working class students, such as this students' interview asking for working class representation at York.

Hundreds of stories published originally on The Tab have made national news, local writers and teams have exposed the Warwick boys who made rape jokes in their group chat, the Coventry dodge ball team who wore anti-Semitic slogans on their white t-shirt social, and the Cambridge student who set fire to a £20 note in front of a homeless man.

Why should I write for The Tab and not somewhere else?

Writing for The York Tab, your stories will reach thousands of student readers, and while your stories won’t be printed, you’ll get a much better understanding of how modern news media actually works.

The team works with an Assistant Editor based at Tab HQ in London. They provide training in the basics of reporting, and quality advice on how to make your writing stand out you won’t get anywhere else.

Tab alumni frequently go on to work for famous publications all over the world, including VICE, The Times, and Vogue. Just this year, former Tab student writers started jobs at The Telegraph, The Sun, and Cosmopolitan
