| UPDATED Loughborough Loughborough University mugging Radmoor Park robbery

Thugs armed with an imitation handgun and a sheath knife have been jailed after mugging a Loughborough University student and threatening to hurt him.

The unnamed student was walking across Radmoor Park on his way to the Students’ Union when he was approached by three men.

Prosecuting lawyer Mark Knowles described the incident. One of the men, Ricky Worden, “raised his arm in the air and pointed a gun at [the victim], demanding he put his hands up.”

The defendants, all wearing bandanas as disguises, then allegedly pointed a knife at the student, and told him to hand over his wallet and iPhone.

The frightened student gave his phone and cash, but managed to keep the wallet as it was a 21st birthday present.

After they asked for his PIN code, he was told to get down on the ground as the muggers ran off.

Kathryn Hirst, defending, said: “The fact they yielded so little reflects what they thought a student might have, which was wide of the mark.”

Ricky and Macauley Worden were eventually caught with their accomplice Dominic Hunt.

The brothers were given a three-year jail sentence as they had prior convictions relating to violent acts, and Hunt has been punished with an 18-month detention and training sentence.

Judge Nicholas Dean QC said: “It’s very hard to overstate the terror the victim felt.

“It’s the use of weapons and the extraordinary frightening experience the victim was subjected to that makes it an extremely serious robbery.

“It could hardly be more serious.”

Dean also said that the two brothers could of faced 8-years in jail had they been adults.
