Durham Uni investigating after student had ‘curry muncher’ written on face at club social

A member of Cuth’s Running Club has been photographed with the words “curry muncher” written across their forehead at a society event.

The photo shows the student with writing on his forehead holding something in their mouth and with a piece of cardboard tied round their neck, whilst another student can be seen in shot also with writing on their forehead, but it cannot be made out.

Part of St Cuthbert’s Society, the running club posted the picture on their Instagram Story, before taking it down a few hours later.

It is not currently clear why the student had the term written on their forehead, nor whether the incident was racially motivated.

Describing themselves as a “friendly, non-competitive environment”, Cuth’s Running Club state on St Cuthbert’s Society JCR website that they hold “a variety of running and social events that take place regularly throughout the year” and that “all are welcome at anywhere from one session to every event”.

They also describe their socials as “crazy and creative” and instruct newcomers to “bring out your best costume and enjoy”.

The news comes after allegations of racism within the Durham Union Society surfaced earlier this year. During these previous allegations, a Durham University spokesperson vowed “to learn” from the controversy surrounding the university’s response to racism amongst students.

A Durham University spokesperson said: “An incident has been brought to our attention and we are looking into this urgently. We condemn any incidents of racism in the strongest possible terms and are working hard to counter all forms of discrimination, including racism.”

Cuth’s Running Club have been contacted for comment.
