From Amy Winehouse to Cinderella, there’s something for everyone
As a student at York, exploring the theatres is a must. The Grand Opera House York has a packed schedule of events before the end of 2025. From concerts to musicals, comedy to pantomimes, there’s something for everyone.
The Grand Opera House wasn’t always a theatre. It opened in 1902 with “Little Red Riding Hood” starring Florrie Ford, and has since changed hands several times: From F.J. Butterworth to the Shepherd of Shambles, and later India Pru Co. Ltd, who spent four million pounds restoring it to its former glory in 1987. Any of these events are well worth the visit. After all, who doesn’t love a theatre show in a beautiful building?
Bugsy Malone the Musical
Alan Parker’s world-famous “Bugsy Malone” hits York with Pick Me Up Theatre from 31st October to 8th November. Featuring a cast of 40 talented young performers, the show brings all the classic songs from the beloved film to life – a perfect pick for anyone wanting to support the country’s youngest musical talent.
Set in Prohibition-era New York, rival gangsters Fat Sam and Dandy Dan battle for control. As chaos unfolds, Bugsy Malone, a penniless ex-boxer, falls for aspiring singer Blousey Brown. Between love, loyalty, and trouble, Bugsy must help Fat Sam defend his business while trying to resist his old flame.

Named after Michael’s 1996 hit “Fastlove” the show honours his legendary career. The 1996 song is the second single from his third studio album; it is about searching for a physical connection. Fastlove stayed at the number one spot in the UK for three weeks and and remains one of his most downloaded tracks. Starring Joseph Sansome as George Michael, the production combines live music, stunning visuals, and a full light show. Tickets to the show start at just £26 – we love a student friendly budget.
A Fairytale for Christmas
Christmas in November? Absolutely. The ultimate Irish Christmas concert returns to York after amassing thousands of festive fans across the globe. And better yet, it arrives just as the city’s Christmas market opens, making it the perfect seasonal outing.

World-class singers, dancers, and musicians perform stunning renditions of holiday favourites. A Fairytale for Christmas takes the stage in York from 24th–25th November.
