It has to be said: This year’s MAFS UK is boring and feels like an utter slog to watch
Why are some of these episodes longer than a movie!?
I look forward Married at First Sight UK every year without fail, because MAFS is actually one of the only shows left that feels mostly unfiltered and chaos. It feels like glorious old days of reality TV and I adore the chaos and how my opinions flip flop on everyone in the space of 30 minutes. This year should have once again been another batch of iconic, but it must be said – it is not hitting. After I finish Big Brother, I am not filled with giddiness at reality TV chaos about to unfold for me. I actually dread it. I dread the intense conversations and how everything takes half an hour. I dread the predictability. Nothing is hitting, so why does this year’s MAFS UK feel like an utter boring slog?
TV is stacked, and MAFS feels like a marathon
This time of year is always absolutely stacked for TV, but this time it feels like overkill. Some nights of the week I have to set time aside to watch Big Brother, Drag Race UK and MAFS all in one night. Tonight, we have Celebrity Traitors entering the fray. This would actually maybe all a cause for celebration if MAFS UK wasn’t feeling like a boring slog – but I fear what this is actually doing is amplifying how utterly uninteresting it’s become.
Out of all the shows in the nightly lineup, it’s MAFS UK that’s become a chore.
Why are episodes longer than a trip to the cinema?

I do feel like one absolutely mahoosive part of this is because the episodes are currently feeling like each one lasts the best part of two hours. I wholeheartedly believe with my entire chest that no reality TV should be running over an hour and 20 MAX. If Love Island this year managed it, where the cameras are on Islanders all of the day, and can still cut it down to a riveting hour filled with context and interest then there’s no excuse why MAFS UK can’t. Instead, we are watching feature length films of the same old slog they churn out year after year.
It’s got predictable, and nearly all of the dynamics between the cast feel completely predictable. Except for the fact we don’t see the majority of it – which leads me into my biggest gripe with how exhausting and oftentimes bewildering this season has felt so far.
Everything interesting keeps happening when the cameras aren’t rolling
I understand that MAFS UK isn’t one of those shows like Love Island and Big Brother where the cast are filmed 24 hours of the day. Multiple cast members have spoken about how they get prepared for the cameras arriving at their apartments and that conversation topics are sort of pre planned. But the issue with the fact the MAFS UK cast aren’t getting filmed all the time has created a big gap in context for us this year.
Almost everything interesting has happened when the cameras aren’t there. I have no clue what’s going on between Julia-Ruth and Divarni. Huge drama around Stephen happened on a cast night out that wasn’t filmed. Last night, Keye and Davide had a disagreement that – you guessed it – happened off camera.
It’s making for wholly unsatisfying TV so far. I hope this year’s MAFS UK can shrug off its boring slog era further down the line but right now it’s more of the same with a cast it’s increasingly difficult to connect with.
