Here are the best study spots to romanticise Exeter this autumn

It’s time to channel your inner Rory Gilmore

I undertook the arduous task of exploring Exeter’s local coffee shops, cafes, and cute spots to determine which are best for romanticising our lives this autumn – while still getting that degree.

For Exeter students, the charm of Freshers’ Week is just beginning to wear off, and the workload is starting to pile up. So, discovering the perfect study spot for you is essential to surviving the incoming deadline season.

I find cafes are best for getting through that hefty workload, accompanied by a chai latte or a hot chocolate (it just gets that little bit easier).

1. Reed Hall

Reed Hall is known by many as an idyllic area of campus. Perhaps lesser known is the fact that you can actually go inside, grab a coffee from the Barisca coffee shop, and get some work done.

The cafe is reasonably small, compared to the size of the building, but seems to be more undiscovered by the student body – so you won’t have to fight for a seat.

If you need a break from the hordes of students in Forum, or are tired of fighting for a spot in the law library, then try Reed Hall. Without having to leave campus you can be immersed in the changing autumnal nature, and get cosy with a coffee that doesn’t break the bank.

2. Artigiano Espresso & Wine Bar

Located slap bang in the centre of Exeter on the high street, Artigiano is a great spot for studying. It’s one of those places where you can lock in for a good hour or two, but make sure you bring some headphones, because it can get busy.

This spacious cafe has big tables, so you can bring your friends for a group study sesh. It’s low-lit, with an extensive menu and very chic vibes, perfect for autumn.

If you fancy a sweet treat, the menu choices and impeccable baked goods will keep you going to finish that homework you’ve been putting off.

Not only is Artigiano a cafe, but at night it becomes a bar, and on Mondays you can unwind after a busy day of lectures by listening to live jazz and sipping a cocktail.

3. The Undergrad

It wouldn’t be an article about Exeter if I didn’t include the famous Undergrad. Aptly named, this cafe is a hotspot for students. And there’s a reason why; the Undergrad, located right next to The Depot, serves up study vibes all day long.

With cosy bohemian decor and plants galore, The Undergrad is the perfect place to romanticise your autumnal student experience. Be careful though, it fills up quick! And finding a spot in this cosy cafe can sometimes be an enduring task.

Luckily, they provide seating outside for those sunny autumnal days. They also have a diverse and tasty menu for some additional study fuel.

4. The Sunset Society

This cafe is another one incredibly popular with students, and for good reason. For those of you living around St James, the Sunset Society is perfectly located, and it serves a brunch menu all day long!

The three spacious rooms means you wont have to worry about finding a seat. Filled with surf memorabilia, this cafe is the perfect spot to reminisce about the summer just gone.

I know many of you don’t want to succumb to the cold clutches of winter just yet, so this is the perfect place to get that reading done, while feeling like you are still next to the beach.

5. Zuki’s Caffetteria

This spot is one I’ve only just discovered this year, and it’s safe to say it’s a hidden gem. Conveniently located next to Exeter Central Station, it’s the perfect place to get some work done before catching a train for a weekend getaway.

The ceiling is adorned with greenery, making for a beautiful location to romanticise uni work. Zuki’s, known for its Italian and Turkish cuisine, serves a mix of food, drinks, and sweet treats. It is on the smaller side, so it’s definitely better suited for small groups.

Of course, there are many many more amazing places in Exeter. Honourable mentions include the Cathedral Green for an outdoor picnic and reading spot, 12Bar for the music lovers, and spots on the Quay like Sundays for those of us who adore a water’s edge study spot.

Wherever it may be, I definitely recommend you go out and explore some new spots in Exeter this autumn – you never know what you might find!
