Everything you need to know: Freshers advice from The York Tab team

Don’t panic if you don’t find your people in Freshers’ Week.

Being a fresher can be one of the most exciting years of your life, but it can also come with new anxieties and worries. Scrolling through your FYP endlessly and finding lots of advice about what to bring (and what not to bring) can also feel overwhelming. There is so much to love about being a student in York, and with the best advice from our York Tab team, we are sure you will feel ready for the fast approaching Freshers’ Week. We look forward to meeting you in September!

Violet (Co-editor in chief)

Violet’s advice: My top advice would be to pick a society and put your all into it – P.S. I recommend The York Tab 😉 Extra curricular activities besides your degree will look great on your CV!

Frances (Co-editor in chief)

Frances’s advice: Don’t worry if you don’t make many friends during Freshers’ Week, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to make more friends via your course, your college and your house. Just have fun, and stay safe! x

Eloise (Features editor)

Eloise’s advice: If there is a society or new activity you want to try in Freshers, go for it! Joining college netball in my second year was one of the best things I did at uni, and my only regret is that I didn’t give it a go sooner. My other piece of advice would be to talk to people you meet and don’t be afraid to try and start conversations. You never know who you might end up getting along really well with, and become one of your closest friends.

Shannon (News editor)

Shannon’s advice: Don’t panic if you don’t find your group immediately! Friendships take time and you’ll meet amazing people in so many different ways throughout the year.

But prepare to argue over whose turn it is to empty the bins!

Hannah (Socials editor)

Hannah’s advice: Freshers’ Week – as cheesy as it sounds – is the best time to meet people and make friends. So don’t be afraid to say yes – go to events, wear the fancy dress and have fun. Also don’t forget you have the power to invite people to things too. One of the best decisions my flat made was hosting pres before the first club night in freshers. We invited anyone we knew despite the fear they would say no. While not everyone showed up, the ones that did have gone on to become my closest friends at uni. The real lesson to learn from Freshers’ Week is that you have to fake it until you make it and trust me, somehow you will make it!

Eloise (Tiktok editor)

Eloise’s advice: I would probably say that your flat aren’t the be all and end all of friendship.

Follow the STYCs, you don’t want to get lost on your first week.

Talk to as many people as you can, who knows you might find your best friend

Finally, if you’re feeling a little low, take a late night walk around campus, trust me it really helps!

Keep an eye out on our socials for more information about our first open meeting – we look forward to meeting you all!
