Beep beep! These are the uni cities where its officially the hardest to book a driving test

Get comfy, passenger seat princesses

At some UK test centres, the wait for a driving test is so long you could have walked to your destination by now — twice. BBC Verify found that three quarters of the 319 driving test centres across Great Britain have reached the maximum average waiting time of 24 weeks to book a practical test. Getting a driving licence used to be a rite of passage.

Now it’s more of a rite of waiting… and waiting… and waiting. Some test centres are dragging it out so long you’ll be calculating how many more favours you can owe your mates before they start charging Uber rates. Honestly, with the looks of some of these, I’d book my practical the second I stepped out of the theory test centre, because if you thought a Ticketmaster queue was bad, try booking a test in one of these cities.

York – 12 weeks

Starting off strong we have York with a three month wait — that’s basically a term worth of dodging geese while waiting for someone to give you a lift

Durham – 15 weeks

As of 2023, Durham had the longest wait time in the North East, of 18.1 weeks for a driving test. Right now, the earliest available driving test date you can currently book on the DVSA website at the Durham driving test centre is 15 weeks. This gives the average Durham student long enough to walk from Durham to Newcastle, complain about it, and still not have their test booked.

Leeds – 18-22 weeks

One of the Leeds test centres has an 18 week wait, the other a 22 week wait. By the time your test comes around, you’ll have perfected your Otley Run strategy, staggered through every pub on the Otley Run and still be stuck in the passenger seat.

Warwick – 20 weeks

The wait time at the Warwick driving test centre is 20 weeks. So, if you’re living in Leamington Spa, you will most definitely be stuck begging your friends with cars to drive you to Aldi. By the time you book your test, you’ll have queued up for Smack (and probably not made it in if you don’t have a queue jump) more times than you can count!

Bristol – 21 weeks

Bristol has a wait time of 21 weeks. Hope you like asking friends for lifts, because that’s basically a full-time job now.

Liverpool – 21-23 weeks

Liverpool has a few test centres to choose from. Right now, the longest wait times are at the Southport test centre (21 weeks) and the St. Helens test centre (23 weeks).

Oxford – 22 weeks

One of Oxford’s two driving test centre has a 22 week long wait, but that’s only because they believe their driving test backlog belongs in the top two, because god forbid Oxford ever does anything normal without pretending it’s more prestigious than the rest of the country.

Cambridge – 26 weeks

The earliest you can book your driving test at the Cambridge (Brookmount Court) centre is 26 weeks on the DVSA website, because if you’re going to wait half a year, you might as well do it with an air of superiority. It’s four whole weeks longer than Oxford, proving even their queues insist on being superior.
