TikTok Shop offers a £10 voucher after shapewear leaves woman with second-degree burns
Okay, new fear unlocked
A woman has been left with second-degree burns after wearing shapewear she bought from a TikTok shop that “melted” into her skin. Now, a spokesperson from TikTok has responded.
So, Molly-May Watson is a 27-year-old executive assistant from Kennington, south London, purchased an £8.57 “Spanx-like” pair of shorts last year from a seller on the TikTok shop called MOONGIRL-UK.

Basically, she wore the shapewear for the first time under a dress while attending a baby shower of her sister and felt a “burning” sensation on her upper right thigh. “For some reason, I thought a bee had got into my dress. I felt this burning on my upper bum cheek and side of my leg,” she said.
Molly rushed to the bathroom to check what it was. She revealed that the elastane stretchy material shorts had “melted into her leg”.
She said, “I’ve had to rip them off and I’ve been left with first and second degree burns. I’m unable to walk properly at the moment.” Molly was told she could be “scarred for life” after attending A&E at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
Doctors at the hospital confirmed that it was “definitely was a burn”. However they said it was “strange” and they “don’t really know if it’s a heat burn or a chemical reaction”.
Molly had only worn the shorts once before, briefly, to try them on and make sure they fit ahead of her sister’s baby shower.

So, was she given any compensation for it?

Apparently, she tried finding the seller on Google after the mishap, but she couldn’t. She said, “This makes me think it wasn’t legit in the first place.” So, she complained to TikTok Shop through the help function on the app.
“I sent TikTok Shop a message with pics of all the burns and the melted shorts and said ‘this is what happened.'”
She also spoke to an agent who told her that they’d need to pass it on to a specialist team. After which, she sent another chaser message.
Eventually, she was offered a £10 coupon as compensation, which she felt “uncomfortable” accepting since she didn’t want to shop from there again.

After the incident, Molly’s friends and colleagues also told her they had bought similar items which left them feeling “really irritated”.
She said she’s made up her mind never to order anything of that “budget” or from a “third-party seller.”
A month later, TikTok confirmed that both the listing and the seller’s page were removed from the site. A spokesperson said TikTok had already responded and provided compensation to her after the complaint.
Molly is still recovering and has been advised to see a doctor if she notices any changes.
