EA just revealed the stupid reason it’s not making The Sims 5, but it will save us money

Ugh, so conflicted

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t massively conflicted on the subject of The Sims 5, because EA just revealed why it won’t be making a follow-up to The Sims 4 anytime soon.

After years of waiting and about 40 billion admittedly stunning expansion packs, EA confirmed the ditching of The Sims 5 last year.

“What we’re really working with our community on is this a new era of The Sims. We are not going to be working on replacements of previous projects; we’re only going to be adding to our universe. With that, you’ll see there are more ways to experience ‘The Sims’ on different platforms, different ways to play, transmedia, and lots of great offerings within this universe,” general manager of The Sims, Kate Gorman, said.

“So absolutely, we’re still continuing to support TS4 more than ever. Still continue to deliver expansion packs and updates, and fixes. But what this is to say is, the way we’re going to do things going forward is a little different. And it’s really exciting, and it’s really the most expansive iteration of The Sims yet.”

Still, I was holding out hope that EA would see the error of its ways and follow through with The Sims 5. Unfortunately, my praying was in vain.

So, why isn’t EA going to make The Sims 5?

In a new interview with Variety, EA president Laura Miele detailed why they are focusing on the continuation of The Sims 4, and not launching the highly demanded The Sims 5.

“What I wouldn’t want to have happen is you to have to start from day zero and start from scratch and give up all of the things that you have created, give up all of the content that you’ve purchased over the years,” she said, referencing the solid bank of expansion packs.

Expansion packs, DLCs, and accessory kits have become a staple of The Sims 4 experience, from the sleek embrace of the bathroom kit to the stunning outfits of other packs. There are now over 85, with more planned for the future.

The Sims 4 is also so “technologically” sound that EA doesn’t feel the need to replace the engine with a new and updated version. Instead – and this is the eye-roll moment – EA will be focusing on its multimedia projects like a movie and TV show.

“It’s going to be so full circle and so fulfilling to bring content in a linear way and an interactive way, simultaneously, and even have it adapt to fans,” she added.

“When we have a couple of ideas about how we would go to market with a movie and a couple of different expressions, I just think the opportunity is so ripe.”

Again, I will never say no to more one-on-one time with The Sims 4, but damn did I want the fifth instalment.
