Wife of man killed in MRI accident details horrifying moment machine ‘pulled him in’

He was wearing a 9kg metal necklace

A 61-year-old man from New York has died after he was sucked into an MRI machine because he was wearing a big metal necklace.

His wife was having an MRI scan on her knee at a medical centre in Long Island on 17th July, and he entered the room at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury without permission while the machine was still running, BBC News reports.

Adrienne Jones-McAllister told local news she called Keith into the room after the scan was finished to help her get up off the table. However, the machine was still on, so his 9kg metal chain caused him to be sucked in. The necklace had a lock on it and was used for weight training.

“The male victim was wearing a large metallic chain around his neck causing him to be drawn into the machine, which resulted in a medical episode,” the Nassau County Police Department said.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines use strong magnetic fields to create detailed images of the inside of the body. Due to this, the scanners attract metal objects.

Adrienne Jones-McAllister spoke about the horrifying moment she watched her husband get sucked into the machine in an interview with local news station News 12 Long Island.

“He waved goodbye to me and then his whole body went limp,” she said. “At that instant, the machine switched him around, pulled him in, and he hit the MRI.”

“I said: ‘Could you turn off the machine, call 911, do something, turn this damn thing off!’. He went limp in my arms.”

She said the technician tried to pull her husband away from the machine, but he was already seriously injured. Kevin suffered several heart attacks after he was freed from the MRI machine and died.
