Cardiff student pleads guilty to racial assault after calling worker ‘f*cking Welsh c**t’
‘How is that racist? You’re white. You’re Welsh’
A student from Cardiff has pleaded guilty to racial assault after calling a hospital security guard a “fucking Welsh c**t”.
Layla Ahmed, a psychology student, initially said that her comment was not racist. However, she later conceded that her choice of language was indeed racially offensive.
The 20-year-old student visited Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales on 8th December last year after her sister experienced seizures.
According to the Daily Express, Ahmed’s defence solicitor told the court her client became “frustrated at staff not being able to treat her sister” but that she accepts “she made comments solely out of desperation in the heat of the moment”.
However, prosecuting, Nichola Evans explained that Ahmed became aggressive and was subsequently asked to leave by security guard Ian Sullivan. Ahmed then called Mr Sullivan a “fucking Welsh c**t”.

Whilst the Welsh are not considered a racial group, the Equality Act 2010, Section 9.2.b, states national origin is a protected characteristic and discrimination against it is considered unlawful racial discrimination.
Ms Butt told the court that her client had been concerned about her sister’s condition: “She is remorseful. She accepts she should not have said what she said. She is 20 years old and has never been arrested before or since.
“I don’t agree it was a substantial disturbance. It was not a situation where other intervention or additional assistance was required.”
District Judge Rhys Williams addressed the defendant while delivering his verdict, saying that the language she used was “abusive” and included a “racial element”.

“You were frustrated by the situation. You were asked to leave by the security guard and you used abusive language towards him,” he said. “That language included a racial element and it was directed at a security guard who was only doing his job in that situation.”
Judge Williams then decided on the punitive measures, which include a £120 fine, £50 compensation for the victim, £85 in prosecution costs, and a victim services surcharge of £48.
Ahmed, who lives in Cathays, currently receives a student loan of £3,400 every four months and earns approximately £100 per week working as a part-time support worker.
She is set to settle the fines in instalments, with the court ordering a minimum payment of £20 per month.
