Um, there’s another cake feud going on but this time it’s over Tesco’s new Matilda Cake
It’s like the Colin the Caterpillar saga all over again
Users on TikTok are elbows deep in the latest juicy drama right now – and it’s all over a cake.
The hype over Tesco’s newly released chocolate cake was short lived after people immediately compared it to another big company’s version, which previously went viral online.
The Matilda Cake is Tesco’s ginormous chocolate cake slice, and takes inspiration from the iconic 24 layer chocolate cake Bruce Bogtrotter tackles in Roald Dahl’s book and film, Matilda.
However, both Tesco’s and its supplier, Studio Bakery, have stirred up some backlash from social media users, after the cake was compared to one made by UK bakery, Get Baked.
@khoslaa Let’s see if it tastes the same as the Bertha/Bruce get baked slice 🤔🤔 #matildacake #brucecake #getbaked #berthacake #matildacakelondon
Going viral for its postal slices, Get Baked first created the huge chocolate cake in lockdown, inspired by the Bruce Bogtrotter feast. Think huge layers of chocolate cake coated in ganache, with the creation formerly being known as Bruce, and now named Bertha.
People went mad for it, with the Leeds bakery becoming so popular it recently opened another shop in Manchester.
Both the Matilda and Bertha cakes look similar and are made up of loads of sponge layers, sandwiched together by buttercream. People have pointed out all the wild parallels between The Matilda Cake and the Bertha cake which was created by the Instagram famous baker, Rich Myers.

Studio Bakery, the company which launched the new cake into Tesco, shared a video on TikTok of the jaw-dropping slices being cut, with a track from Matilda the Musical in the background.
Opening the comments, people immediately discussed the similarities between the beloved Bertha slices from Get Baked and The Matilda Cake made by Studio Bakery.
One user even on commented on the video, saying: “Can’t wait for you to hear from the Get Baked legal team”.
It’s like the Colin the Caterpillar saga all over again.
Rich Myers, the owner and brains behind the Get Baked operation, shared his thoughts about the new dessert on Instagram yesterday, calling the whole fiasco a potential “declaration of war” between the two bakeries.
He said: “As you can imagine, I have received a very large number of messages from people sending me photos and links to this new ‘dupe Get Baked cake’ that’s available in Tesco.
“Stuff like this is quite exhilarating for me, so please allow me some time to take it all in”.

He also explained that he turned down offers to stock Bertha in supermarkets in the past.
The statement clearly takes a funny stab at the supermarket for taking inspiration from the bakery’s original slice, as it reads: “When I say Waitrose can’t even get a text back, I mean they’ve been sat on read with ASDA and Morrisons for the last six months”.
The Get Baked owner doesn’t go into depth about his frustrations, but seems to have felt the pressure of the wave of online chatter in his sassy response.
“I drove to work today listening to the theme tune to Succession on repeat. It’s an hour long journey. I very nearly smoked a cigarette” he wrote.
“You know in films when the bad guy says something like ‘if I wanted you dead, you’d already be dead’. Well my version of that is ‘if I wanted to be in supermarkets, we’d already be in supermarkets.’
Rich Myers ends on a slightly ambiguous note, saying: “I’m not totally sure, but I think this could be a declaration of war – will see how it plays out”.
Not one to miss out on the laughs, Morrisons even commented on Rich’s Instagram post, writing: “We’re still here in your DMs in case you change your mind.”
Across TikTok and Instagram, users have poked fun at the copycat cake, claiming it “will not be as good” as the original version, and others shaming the supermarket for “distastefully trampling over a small other business”.
A fellow commenter also said: “I see a whole Netflix documentary coming. Don’t f*ck with Bertha”.
I feel like that sums it up perfectly. Nobody knows which direction Get Baked will take to tackle Studio Bakery, but it’s the definition of “you can copy my homework, but change it up a bit so it’s not obvious”.
