Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage episode reveals darker side of Meemaw in Young Sheldon

Is she really the Meemaw we thought she was?

Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage is the spin off we never knew we needed and has already brought us loads of new context about Sheldon and the rest of the family.

For one, people are waiting for the soon breakup of Georgie and Mandy, in line with storyline provided by The Big Bang Theory. Season 11 episode 23 of the show saw Sheldon and Georgie discuss his multiple past relationships, and so we already know that his and Mandy’s relationship didn’t last. But there’s actually another plot within the storyline which is carried across into the spin off.

Most of us who watched Young Sheldon or The Big Bang Theory also saw how Meemaw was the light-hearted and fun Grandma we all wished to have. However come season five, we learn about her darker side – her gambling.

In Young Sheldon, Meemaw’s gambling is shown to just be a bit of fun for her, and isn’t portrayed as a serious addiction. As she runs her backroom casino behind her laundromat it fuels the fun but is only displayed to be a background hobby.

However, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage has also changed a key storyline in Young Sheldon that relates to Meemaw’s cheeky little hobby – and spins a darker web.

Here’s how Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage made this Young Sheldon story much worse

Episode 19 of Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, Snitch v. Deadbeat, shows Mandy’s father, Jim McAllister, having to find money to pay back a gambling debt to Meemaw. And it’s no petty debt – we’re talking over $1,000 lost on bad bets according to the episode.

He tries to create a deal with her, but she demands that she wants her money now and claims that Mandy’s attempts to get her money are too slow for her linking. Meemaw’s dark side is then brought out in this episode where we witness how she isn’t always so relaxed and when it comes to gambling and money, she’s actually quite serious. Calling Audrey, Meemaw creates a big rift between the Cooper and McAllister families over her gambled cash.

This continuation error between the shows is understandable since Young Sheldon was a more child friendly programme. However, it was a shock to audiences to see Meemaw in such a dark light and which portrays her gambling problem as much bigger than previously alluded to.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen a darker side of her character through the spin off, with Dale and Meemaw’s relationship being much worse in Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage than it was in Young Sheldon.

So, is there more to the characters we love in this franchise, or are they just a few hidden secrets?
