Lancaster take the trophy: A look inside Roses 2025 closing ceremony

Here’s all the action from the ceremony

On Sunday 4th May, Roses 2025 came to an end, with Lancaster taking home the trophy for the fourth year in a row.

Lancaster ended the weekend on 184 points and York on 160, making Roses 2025 one of the closest tournaments of the last few years.

The win was a new record; neither team had previously won four consecutive tournaments.

Rugby Union: Women’s 1st match

The closing ceremony began with the women’s 1st rugby game beginning at 3pm. Lancaster got the better of the first half, scoring two tries before half-time, but York got one try back before half-time.

However, York scored the first try of the second half.  They were then able to take the lead and won the game 15-12, with a very strong performance.

It was a great day for York’s rugby teams, as the men’s 1st team had also beaten Lancaster earlier that day, 30-24.

This result wasn’t enough for York to secure the Roses victory this year, with Lancaster winning Roses on 184 points, and York on 160 – one of the closest tournaments in recent years.

York Student Union’s Sports Officer, Tanisha Jain, then presented the closing ceremony. She opened the ceremony congratulating and thanking all of the people who had worked so hard behind the scenes to make Roses 2025 possible.

The tournament’s sponsors also spoke, describing Roses as “An amazing showcase for university sport and although the result didn’t quite go the way we hoped it would, it is absolutely wonderful to see everybody coming together and taking part.”

Tanisha also announced that over the weekend, more than £1600 had been raised so far for the charities York Mind and Lancaster Mind, with donations still being received. A representative of York Mind also awarded the Volunteer of the Tournament trophy at the ceremony.

Finally, the vice-chancellors of the University of York and Lancaster University spoke about the importance of the tournament, and all of the students involved that make it possible every year. The Team of the Tournament award was then awarded to York Lacrosse Men’s 1st team, before Lancaster were presented with the winning trophy.

As Lancaster paint Roses red once again, we can look back on Roses 2025 as one of the closest tournaments yet and look forward to an away tournament next year!
