The alleged elaborate backstory this fake athlete used to scam 26 women out of $1.3m is insanity

Daejon Labrayae Love and his accomplice are now facing federal charges and a lengthy prison sentence after allegedly scamming 26 women out of a whopping $1.3 million as a fake NFL player. 

If you looked at Daejon’s Instagram, which has since been taken down, you’d see a life of luxury with swanky cars, tropical vacays, and the type of life you’d expect from a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. But it was all a lie, from having zero athletic background to the cars and clothes he was often seen in.

Daejon Love’s NFL scam started in 2022

According to the US Attorney’s Office, the 35-year-old and his 18-year-old accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan, began their scheme in 2022.

Through the concerning power of social media and trying to manipulate Google searches to back up his claims, Daejon crafted a completely fictitious persona. He was an undrafted wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, and his Instagram was chock-full of made-up training videos and pictures of him in his gear. Aliases he used included Jon Love, Daejon Love, Avril Lyto Love and Jordan Love, and he also posed as a real estate investor. 

The scheme was allegedly quite simple: Daejon would woo a woman with lavish dates, and then Taylor would swoop in as, again, a completely made-up financial advisor. With the women already on the hook romantically, they’d use that attraction to take investments totalling a staggering $1.3 million.

“Love convinced many of the victims they were in sincere romantic relationships with Love, that he was a sophisticated investor, and that Chan was his investment adviser who helped Love grow a fortune worth tens of millions of dollars,” the US Attorney’s Office statement said. “Love had romantic relationships with many of the victims and told them he wanted to build wealth and a future together. Love advertised nonexistent investment vehicles and claimed these investments would generate massive returns for both him and his victims.”

According to the US Attorney’s Office, Daejon would cut off communication with the women when the money dried up, or they started asking too many questions. Officials are aware of 26 women across numerous states, but there are “many more victims” likely out there.

Both men were arrested on August 24 and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.

The fake NFL player went above and beyond 

The story has caught like wildfire on social media, and so much information has since emerged about Daejon Love’s alleged scam as an NFL player. 

For instance, he used his fabricated career to get a range of items for free, messaging a braider on Instagram: “I play for the 49ers btw, so I’ll need security when I’m there.”

Though he met the majority of the women through various dating apps, part of the scam was crafting a believable backstory. This reportedly included purchasing an NFL kit, doing Insta highlight reels on his “NFL Journey”, and posting content that allowed followers to get to know him and how he could afford such expensive cars.

“The scheme relied on Love’s creation of fictitious personas and display of a lavish lifestyle which Love presented to victims both in person and on social media websites,” federal authorities said in a press release. 

“Chan and Love also hosted three-way FaceTime calls in which they showed victims falsified investment gains and encouraged victims to part with their money. Victims sent Love and Chan money due to their belief that their money would be invested in legitimate investment vehicles on the victims’ behalf.”

This is a developing case, and more information is expected to follow. Daejon Love and Taylor Chan are yet to comment.
