Billie Eilish called out for being a ‘hypocrite’ while officiating brother’s lavish wedding

Billie Eilish is being majorly called out once again for being a “hypocrite” after the comment she made at the Grammys earlier this year, and this time it’s in relation to her brother’s wedding. 

Music producer Finneas married his girlfriend Claudia Sulewski in a lavish ceremony in Montecito, California, on Saturday, and the wedding was officiated by Billie. They tied the knot at the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, and Sulewski wore a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown.

After the wedding news dropped, people were quick to point out that the area where they got married used to belong to Native Americans, so it is “stolen land”. A Native American tribe called the Chumash used to inhabit a huge area of California’s coast that stretched more than 7,000 miles, including the San Ysidro Ranch area.

The wedding’s location has drawn criticism after Eilish made some comments about illegal immigration in the US back in February, at the Grammys. She won “Song of the Year” for her track Wildflower, and during her acceptance speech, she criticised Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

“As grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything but that no one is illegal on stolen land,” she said while wearing an ICE badge. “It’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now, and I just feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter. And f**k ICE, that’s all I’m gonna say. Sorry!”

Now, people are accusing her of officiating her brother’s wedding on that very stolen land she was talking about, and she’s being branded a “hypocrite” because of it. One person wrote on Twitter: “Was this on stolen land?” Another said: “Just another day in the life of the biggest hypocrite Hollywood, Billie Eilish.”

It’s not the first time she’s been called out either. After she made the speech, lots of people commented on the fact that Eilish also lives in a mansion that’s built on that same stolen land. She has a huge ranch-style home in Glendale, California, which was previously owned by singer Leona Lewis.

Someone else wrote on Twitter: “Billie Eilish lives in a MANSION BUILT ON NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBAL LANDS. The tribe asked her to return the land and her mansion since it is built on stolen land. She hasn’t responded. HYPOCRITE comes to mind.”

Following the initial backlash, a spokesperson for the Tongva, the indigenous people of California, said: “As the First People of the greater Los Angeles basin, we do understand that her home is situated in our ancestral land. Eilish has not contacted our tribe directly regarding her property, we do value the instance when public figures provide visibility to the true history of this country.

“It is our hope that in future discussions, the tribe can explicitly be referenced to ensure the public understands that the greater Los Angeles Basin remains Gabrieleno Tongva territory.” However, they did “express appreciation” for her comments.
