YOU creators wanted Love and Ellie in season five, but one thing stopped them

I miss them!

If you ask me, the ending of YOU was good. But, there was something missing in YOU season five overall: Love Quinn and Ellie Alves. It turns out, the creators of the show thought about bringing our favourite girlies back, but there was a huge reason they didn’t.

Season five of YOU saw many ghosts of Joe Goldberg past come back to help bring him down. Marienne, Kate and Nadia were all among those who made sure he didn’t get away with what he did. Many people wanted Ellie to make a return to avenge her sister Delilah, and a cameo from Love Quinn would never go a miss. And don’t tell me a Love cameo is off the cards because she’s dead – because the show made it worth with Beck. No excuses!

Showrunner Michael Foley has revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that they heard our calls to bring them back. But ultimately, it didn’t work out. Here’s why.

So, why didn’t Love and Ellie get brought back for YOU season five?

It seems getting Jenna Ortega, who played Ellie, back for season five was the option that was considered the most. She would definitely want revenge on Joe, and would have made a great addition to the storyline.

When asked if anything got cut from season five, or if he had anything he “wished” he’d have been able to get in, Michael Foley said it was Ellie. “We would have loved to have gotten Ellie back, but that was too complicated,” he said.

He was then asked if there was any discussion to bring back Love (played by Victoria Pedretti), given how popular she was and that bringing back dead characters was part of the show’s ending.

Foley said: “There wasn’t just because… we understand she’s a fan favourite. We love the character, we love Victoria Pedretti. Like, great if somebody came up with the right idea. But her character is dead, and we had already used the ghost of her to be in Joe’s head last season. So it felt like we had been to that well already and that her run was done. As writers, it just felt correct that she wasn’t part of the season.”

I’m mad, but I guess I do get it. Sigh.
