Donald Trump warns UK about retaliating against tariffs with spine chilling six-word threat

It might be the most condescending moment yet

This week, Donald Trump started a global trade war after hitting the UK and other former allies with tariffs on exports to the US. We in the UK received a 10 per cent tariff as the EU was slapped with 20 per cent and China 34 per cent. He has since referred to the moment as the US’ “liberation day”, accusing allies of “looting, pillaging, raping and plundering” America.

It was easier to ignore Donald Trump’s ravings when was wasn’t in the big chair of arguably one of the most powerful nations on the planet. He took office in January, but in that short amount of time, he’s beefed Taylor Swift, cut Trans people out of the military, implemented the most deranged cabinet in US political history, and got upset over his Presidential portrait. How many years have we got left?

“Americans really suffered gravely. They watched in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign cheaters have ransacked our factories and foreign scavengers that have torn apart our once beautiful American dream,” he said during a press conference. “Our country and its taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years, but it is not going to happen anymore.”

Simply put, Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs mean that 10 per cent of the price of UK products will be directly funneled into the US government. For us mere mortals down in the trenches, we could find that UK companies hike their prices to cope with the cost of importing – as if things weren’t expensive enough already, thanks Trump.

The UK and other allies could impose their own tariffs on the US in response, but now the Trump administration has warned against it, telling us to take a “deep breath”.

Trump’s government warned the UK about retaliating against tariffs

It’s yet to be seen whether countries will respond to the US tariffs by implementing their own, with our weak-willed government already sharing the relief at our 10 per cent not being higher. Wimps.

Nonetheless, some are reportedly “running the numbers”, with Norwegian minister Cecilie Myrseth, Ursula von der Leyen, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum all looking into retalitory measures.

Perhaps predicting the onslaught of right back at ya’s, Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged allies to think carefully before jabbing back.

“Doing anything rash would be unwise,” he told CNN. “Sit back, take a deep breath, don’t immediately retaliate. Let’s see where this goes, because if you retaliate, that’s how we get escalation.”

Not condescending at all – can we impose tariffs on just Scott Bessent?

Of course, with every new Trump policy comes a self-own, and this one is particularly juicy. Amidst waving his flag around, Trump perhaps unknowingly imposed tariffs on an island inhabited ONLY by penguins.

The penguins have yet to respond, but I have approached them for comment.
