23 more women come forward to Met Police over former UCL student and rapist Zhenhao Zou

Officers say half of those who have contacted them say the attacks happened in London

23 more women have come forward to the Metropolitan Police over former UCL student and convicted rapist Zhenhao Zou.

Zou was convicted in March of 11 counts of rape against 10 women. He was also found guilty of a number of other charges such as three counts of voyeurism, 12 counts of possession of extreme pornographic images, one count of false imprisonment and eight of possession of drugs with intent to commit a sexual offence.

Since his trial, officers say half of those who have spoken to them about Zou allege they were attacked in London.

During Zou’s time in London, he was a Master’s and PhD student at UCL, studying mechanical engineering.

The convicted rapist was originally arrested for one rape, however, after the Met Police combed through his devices, they found he had committed 11 sexual assaults. Only two of his victims had come forward by the time of his conviction.

Following the trial, the Met Police urged potential victims to come forward, and only one month after he was found guilty, 23 women have done so.

According to The Guardian, one of these women is believed to be someone Zou is convicted of attacking, however, the other 22 are not.

The police said that a number of the alleged assaults outlined by the women were not filmed.

Commander Kevin Southworth said this is now something causing officers to believe he assaulted over 60 women: “This particular one seems to be stacking up in exactly the way we were concerned that it would. It tells you something that 23 victims have come forward in a month since we did the appeal. That’s quite a strike rate.”

Commander Southworth added that detectives are in the “middle” of establishing the extent of Zou’s offending, with months, or even years of work to come.

He further explained that the case was being transferred to the Met’s complex case work unit, saying: “The potential for a second or even third trial is there. We’re still now working to build a case.”

The Met’s appeal to potential victims is as follows: “If you wish to speak to Met detectives or make a report relating to Zou, you can also contact police via email on [email protected].

“You can also make a report to police by calling 101 from within the UK, quoting reference 2904/04FEB25.

“If you live in England or Wales and have been affected by this case and would like to seek support from specialist agencies, please contact the independent charity Rape Crisis via their 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line or call them on 0808 500 2222. Specially trained staff are there to listen, answer questions and offer emotional support.”

Zou will be sentenced on 19th June at Inner London Crown Court for the 11 confirmed rapes, and the 24 other charges.
