Family pay tribute to University of York student who died in the River Ouse

19-year-old Evan Geoffrey d’Andilly was described as ‘sunshine’

The family of a University of York student who died in the River Ouse last Wednesday have paid tribute to their son.

19-year-old Evan Geoffrey d’Andilly died after entering the river from Ouse Bridge at around 03:06 am, with his body being found by police divers at midday.

Tributes have poured in for Evan, who’s been described as “gentle” and “our sunshine”, BBC reports.

Originally from Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire, Evan’s family had previously asked for privacy while grieving their loss.

His friends and colleagues had also been receiving support following his unexpected death.

Describing Evan, the family said: “Evan was, and always will be our sunshine, our body.

“His soul was gentle. There are no words to express our sadness.

“We would like to thank everyone who has sent words of kindness and support and everyone who tried to help Evan.

“This is every parent’s, every family’s worst nightmare. We hope that his friends are getting all the support they need.”

A spokesperson for the University of York said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Evan and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“This is also very upsetting news for our community and we are providing support to staff and students affected by Evan’s tragic death.”

Police said they do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
