Here are the five best gigs in Liverpool to see on a budget this semester

If Ticketmaster prices have zero haters then I am dead

Fancy a gig or two this semester but Ticketmaster thinks otherwise? Already blown your weekly budget but still fancy some live music? We’ve got you covered.

There is simply no better feeling than being able to show off knowledge of niche bands that none of your flatmates have heard of, and it’s even better if they make it big. Making time to go out and see live music on an evening can top off a long day of lectures, and every Liverpool student will have a soft spot for the Arts Bar or Jacaranda by the time they graduate.

From student bands to charting musicians, take a look at these five artists performing in Liverpool at a student-friendly cost this semester. The only issue is, if people ask who you’re listening to, you’re going to have to think of new ways to say “they’re pretty underground, you’ve probably never heard of them’, without sounding obnoxious.

The Bracknall at Rough Trade

Essex-based Britpop Rock band The Bracknall released their sophomore album Falling Out Of View in January and peaked the independent album breakers chart on Valentine’s Day. If that isn’t impressive enough, they even placed themselves with the likes of The Killers and Billie Eillish as they place 99th in the Official Albums chart.

Their new album is curated with a mixture of 5 previously released singles, as well as 7 completely new songs. The Bracknall’s sound is reminiscent of the likes of Britpop stalwarts such as The Verve and Oasis, with their melodic guitar tones and catchy choruses. Fancy a night out but the pre drinks vibes aren’t quite there yet? Stick on a couple of tracks by these lot and you’ll be ready for a 6am drunken stroll down Bold Street.

The Bracknall are visiting Liverpool Rough Trade during their UK album tour on the March 6th and with tickets listed at only £15, this gig seems like a no brainer.

Circa Waves at The Olympia

Do you remember the song T-Shirt Weather? Or have you heard T-Shirt Weather and can’t remember whose song it is?

Circa Waves are more than a one-song wonder, as the Liverpool based indie rock band have other catchy tracks like Do You Wanna Talk? and Movies. If you’re a fan of Two Door Cinema Club or The Wombats, then this is the band for you.

Circa Waves look to take on the UK, Germany, France and North America over 2025 with huge artists like Corella, Peace and Maddy Davis joining them for support. Big things are happening for Circa Waves, so get to The Olympia on March 1st for proof. For around £30 on verified resale, you might want to snap up the last few tickets. They’re an indie lover’s dream, trust us.

sixx of swords at The Cellar

I’m sure as a music loving student, you want to not only go to as many gigs as possible and expand your preference and music palette to the best of your ability – a good way to do this is to spot new bands and see them early on.

sixx of swords are an all-female, all-student four piece band and describe themselves as a soft-rock band. Talented lead vocalist Grace Ellen is joined by equally skilled guitarist Hermione, drummer Ella and keyboardist Gracie. They are absolutely buzzing to share their talent and put themselves on the map.

Playing in The Cellar on March 8th, entrance is free so you can’t really go wrong. Another bonus to this gig is that it is in support of International Women’s Day, so you’re supporting a great cause and listening to some incredible live music at the same time. You can’t go wrong with that.

Tories Can’t Dance at The Jacaranda

Tories Can’t Dance host monthly non-profit music nights in Liverpool in support of left-wing social causes. Notably, their May gig raised over £200, all of which was donated to Medical Aid For Palestinians. Clearly these guys know what they’re doing and it’s all for a good reason. Staging local talents for a cheap night allow for students across Liverpool to discover new and upcoming musicians at a student friendly cost, win-win right?

Visit The Jacaranda Club on March 29th at 7pm to see Isabelle Mettle, Flizz and Lazygirl. Pick up early bird tickets for only £6 and even visit the Baltic Market just next door for some high quality food. These are the type of events real music lovers attend; local talent, quality pubs and cheap tickets, what’s not to love?

modernlove. at District

modernlove. are an Indie Pop band based from Dublin and formed in 2017. The band is composed of four incredible musicians that have performed in some notable venues and festivals over the years. At only £16.50 a ticket for their gig on May 10th at District Liverpool, you’d be crazy to not want to head on down and get your groove on.

If this hasn’t given you the itch to go and get some live music into your bloodstream, then I don’t know what will. Take these cheap prices in your stride, because these bands and artists are sure to blow up sometime soon, and you’ll be entitled to the crown of seeing them while they were still up and coming.
