The ultimate guide to celebrating Galentine’s in Sheffield

This one’s for the girlies

Valentine’s Day might be all about love and romance, but who says you can’t spread a bit of the love to your gal pals as well? I am a firm believer that this soppy season isn’t just about romantic relationships – it’s also all about celebrating friendship, appreciating the people who are always there for you. So, take this opportunity to go all out.

Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or somewhere in between, Galentine’s is a perfect excuse to get together with your closest friends and make some unforgettable memories. Sheffield has plenty to offer, from brunch spots to budget-friendly activities, so here’s a guide to planning the ultimate Galantine’s Day (hopefully, without breaking the bank).

Start the day with brunch

If there’s ever a time to justify a long, indulgent brunch, it’s Galentine’s. Head to Ecclesall Road for some of Sheffield’s best spots, like Coffika for great coffee and classic breakfast dishes or Copa Café for a cosy, laid-back vibe.

However, if you and the girls are in a boozier mood, The Bloomery and Proove do a lovely bottomless brunch, so you can sip endless cocktails along with an actually decent scran. Nothing says “I love my besties” like a morning of gossip and one too many mimosas before midday.

Cocktail-making on a budget

Why spend a fortune on overpriced drinks when you can become your own bartender for the night? Hosting a DIY cocktail night is way cheaper (and way more fun) than queueing at West Street bars.

Grab some basic ingredients from your local and shake up some classic, easy-to-make drinks – think Sex on the Beach, Woo Woos, or a Mojito if you’re feeling fancy. No cocktail shaker? No problem – improvise with a little whisk or even a clean pasta jar…or something (student life, we make it work).

Not a cocktail person? No stress. Set up a hot chocolate bar instead with whipped cream, marshmallows, and whatever else makes you feel cosy. Either way, it’s a win.

DIY sip and paint night

Why spend a fortune at a paint-and-sip event when you can have all the fun (and wine) at home?

For those of you who do fancy a more hands-on experience, head to places like Fired Arts or Bistro Bisque, where you can paint everything from mugs to quirky sculptures.

If you’re on a budget, however, skip the class and go DIY. Grab some cheap paints and canvases from The Works, bring out the wine, and let your inner artist loose in the comfort of your own living room. Best part? No one’s judging your masterpiece (unless it’s like, insanely bad).

Movie marathon & spa night

If the thought of going out feels like too much effort, a cosy night in with a classic movie marathon is the perfect Galentine’s plan. Stick on a lineup of romcom icons like Legally Blonde, Clueless, or 10 Things I Hate About You, or maybe just go full chaos mode with Twilight or Magic Mike (just anything that’s peak 2000s cringe really).

Take things up a notch by turning your living room into a DIY spa. Stock up on cheap face masks, deep-conditioning hair treatments, and nail polish from Boots or Superdrug, light some candles, and fully lean into self-care mode. It’s basically a reset for your skin, your soul, and the inevitable hangover from all those bottomless brunch cocktails.

Karaoke

If you’re ready to channel your inner pop star, a karaoke night is the way to go. The Springvale is the place to be on a Friday, serving up cheap pints and absolute belters, while Bar One hosts karaoke on Thursdays – perfect for warming up before a night out or just humiliating yourself in front of course mates.

If you’d rather keep it budget-friendly (or avoid public embarrassment), karaoke sesh at home is just as good. YouTube has endless backing tracks, all you need is a speaker, some questionable dance moves, and the confidence to absolutely butcher Dancing Queen in your living room.

Gift exchange

Why not get each other a gift? A thong exchange for example – set a £5 budget and see who can find the most questionable, hilarious, or outright cursed pair. Nothing says true friendship like forcing your mates to swap the most ridiculous underwear you can find. Bonus points for anything neon, lace-trimmed, or featuring an unnecessary number of sequins.

If the idea of exchanging tiny bits of fabric isn’t your thing, a silly gift swap works just as well – think ugly phone cases, charity shop gems, or something pink and pointless. And if all else fails, a handwritten note hyping up your bestie is always a winner.
