Calling all singletons: Here are the best spots in Exeter for a solo Valentine’s date

Because who needs Hinge anymore?

Dating in Exeter can be a nightmare, especially around this time of year.

Blurry Hinge profiles, endless “you up?” texts and first dates that leave you questioning every decision that led you there. Toss in looming uni deadlines and it’s enough to make anyone want to hibernate until the sun finally decides to make an appearance.

But, here’s a thought – this Valentine’s Day, ditch the drama and celebrate the most important relationship you’ll ever have – the one with yourself.

Forget cheesy cards and overpriced roses. 14th February is the perfect opportunity to indulge in a little well deserved me-time. Fortunately, Exeter is full of hidden gems to allow you to treat yourself.

So, here’s a round up of the best solo adventures you can embark on in Exeter this Valentine’s Day. No awkward small talk required.

1. The Quay

Kick off your day with a relaxing stroll (or run if you’re feeling wild!) along the Exeter Quayside. With gorgeous views of the River Exe and plenty of spots to relax, the quay is hands down one of Exeter’s best features. If you’re up for a bit more action, rent a bike from Saddles & Paddles or try climbing at The Quay Climbing Centre.

2. Independent cinemas

Exeter’s independent cinemas like the Picture House and Exeter Phoenix offers an intimate setting that’s perfect for a solo movie night. Plus you won’t have to argue over which film to watch, or share your popcorn either.

3. Coffee shop

There’s something undeniably romantic about curling up with a steaming mug of coffee and losing yourself in a good book for a couple of hours.

Exeter is home to some of my favourite coffee spots for watching the world go by. Whether you love people watching or journalling, head to The Exploding Bakery, Glorious Art House or The Coffee Cellar and pair your favourite coffee with a fresh pastry for the ultimate unwind.

4. Pottery painting

If you’re the creative type, tap into your inner artist at Jolly Pottery. Spend a relaxing afternoon painting your own ceramics and leave with a handmade keepsake to remember your self-love day.

5. Take yourself shopping

If you ask me, retail therapy is the best kind of therapy.

Exeter has great selection of charity and thrift shops to explore. Take a wander down Gandy Street or through Fore Street’s Arcade with its quirky collection of shops, or explore the St. Thomas charity shop scene and see what catches your eye. The best part? It’s essentially guilt-free shopping, right?!

6. Take a class at Exeter Phoenix

If you’re in the mood to try something new, Exeter Phoenix offers a wide range of creative classes. From photography workshops to salsa classes. Throw yourself out of your comfort zone and you might just discover a new passion or make a masterpiece you’ll be proud to show off.

7. Cozy night in

Sometimes, nothing beats a cozy night in. So, if all else fails why not buy yourself a bouquet of flowers? There’s no judgement here. Pour yourself a glass of your favourite wine, watch some rom-coms and have a night of self-care.
