Um, that’s a bit niche: Here are some of the most rogue societies at Exeter University

Something other than the sports societies

It’s a new term, new year and that can only mean one thing, new hobbies.

Societies in uni are a great way to make new friends, learn new skills and even tap into your really niche interests, but if you think there’s not enough societies at uni, you’ll be wrong.

Exeter Uni has plentyof societies for anyone and everyone to join, whether you are looking for a hobby to avoid the usual January blues or wanting to join a society that isn’t a sport, there’s something for you.

So, here we have some of the University of Exeter’s most rogue societies that you probably wouldn’t expect to be exist.

And, while they may not be conventional, they truly make Exeter a place for everyone to find their passion.

Scare Society

With a specific focus on horror-based literature and films, Scare Society is certainly for an adrenaline seeking audience. Ranging from showing films such as Scream and Eyes without a Face, they have hosted multiple reading groups and a Halloween party social. If horror movies are your thing, Scare Soc will definitely provide you with a weekly dose of thriller.

Exeter Student Volunteers: Dog-Walking

With many of us missing our beloved dogs, my housemates and I were desperate to for a furry friend in our lives again. That’s why the Exeter dog-walking society is so useful for filling that dog-shaped void.

These Exeter student volunteers offer the opportunity to walk dogs for the local community. Not only is this extremely positive for helping the Exeter community but also allows students to have a break from their studies and find comfort in dogs.

Doctor Who Society

Maybe you’re a medic looking to watch a more fictional doctor or a fan since childhood, Doctor Who society is certainly one of Exeter’s more niche societies.

Doctor Who Society provides some brilliantly themed events from pub quizzes to hosting writer Robert Shearman (writer of the episode “Dalek”) creating the perfect community for those who love following the Doctor.

Pickleball Society

If you thrive from the more social elements around tennis, then Pickleball is the perfect society for you. Due to it being a more uncommon sport than tennis, Exeter is one of the first universities to offer the sport, and it’s a brilliant way to meet new people and take part in weekly training sessions, often followed by a pint at the Ram.

Just Dance Society

A great society for those who never grew out of their just dance phase, holding weekly sessions so you can truly let off some steam and reconnect with your inner child. What makes this rogue society truly stand out is the fun collaborations with other musical societies including K-pop and ABBA societies, meaning everyone can find their niche within just dance.

The Rethinking Society

The perfect place to send your overthinking friend where they can properly hone their critical thinking skills.

By always focusing on the importance of good-faith arguments whilst discussing some of the most relevant issues in today’s society, they really test their members’ minds. Whether you’re up for a intellectual and thought-provoking debate or willing to listen to some great minds challenge each other, this society strives to rethink topics ranging from food to magic.

Beer Pong Society

Maybe you’re a pro at winning drinking games at pres and want to take your talent further, then look no further than beer pong society as the perfect rogue society for you.

With team tournaments and socials with the added competitive side, beer pong society is more than just a drinking game.
