Thanos actor finally reveals why he wasn’t at any Squid Game press events or interviews

He claimed there was ‘no reason or opportunity for interviews’

Squid Game is by far Netflix’s most iconic show, but most of its promotion missed out the fan favourite character. Thanos, played by former K-pop BIGBANG star T.O.P, was one of the highlights of season two and gave an incredible performance as the purple-haired rapper. T.O.P shared some similarities with Thanos, including being a rapper and receiving backlash for drugs (albeit very different ones to the ones Thanos was taking). Aside from being the legendary Thanos, T.O.P has opened up about why he wasn’t at any of the Squid Game press events or interviews that the rest of the cast has been involved in.

According to T.O.P, the decision to be left out of the press wasn’t down to him at all. “I wasn’t in a position to make decisions regarding promotions so I followed whatever was decided for me. There were absolutely no other motives or calculations involved. Until now, there hasn’t been a channel for communication and no reason or opportunity for interviews,” he explained to The Korea Times.

He almost didn’t take the role altogether

In fact, T.O.P almost didn’t take the role altogether due to his controversial past. However, it was Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk who convinced him to return to the limelight and take on the huge role of Thanos.

“To be honest, I felt a strong desire to repay Director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s trust in me, who reached out to me when no one had looked at me for 10 years. That’s also why I gained confidence,” he said.

Hwang Dong-hyuk has defended T.O.P as an “impressive” Thanos. In an interview with PEOPLE, the director explained his decision to cast him, saying: “As you may know, the actor Seung-hyun, about nine years ago got involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea and wasn’t able to do any projects for the past nine years in Korea.

“And so this is a comeback after quite a long hiatus, and particularly because he portrays a character that’s a rapper and also someone who is on drugs.”

He continued: “I feel that it took him a lot of guts, in a way, to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too. So I think it took him a lot of courage to take on that role.

“Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character.”
