Squid Game 2 has dominated the Netflix charts and has broken so many records already, but one of the highlights of the new season is all the new characters we’ve met so far. A standout Squid Game player is Thanos the rapper, who is played by a real Korean rapper called T.O.P who you might recognise from the K-Pop group BIGBANG. What you definitely didn’t know is that the blunder Thanos made during the first Squid Game challenge was a nod to a real moment where he forgot his lyrics on stage.
The moment happened during a Korean variety show performance in which T.O.P famously just blanked while rapping his own song. He was in an intense rap battle against GD, another rapper, but when it was his turn he couldn’t finish the lyrics.
The moment in Squid Game where he forgets his lyrics yet again feels like a fun callback to that viral performance which has amassed two million views on YouTube.
Who is T.O.P?

Even if his name, Choi Seunghyun, doesn’t ring a bell to K-pop fans, they would definitely know him from BIGBANG, a boyband where he went by the stage name T.O.P.
Choi began his music career as an underground rapper, but eventually joined the huge Korean label YG Entertainment (the same one as BLACKPINK) and joined BIGBANG in 2006.

In early 2022, YG Entertainment shared that T.O.P. ended his contract with the label and left the music industry without a trace. A year later, in May 2023, T.O.P. explained that he wanted to focus his career on other things like acting, as well as art collecting and even a potential spaceflight aboard the SpaceX Starship (which ended up being cancelled). He still has over 17 million followers on Instagram.
He has faced a lot of controversy over the past few years, including a suspended prison sentence, and has been excluded from most of the Squid Game 2 promo despite being such a central character.
