Erm guys, an actual Gallagher has been spotted in the Grove

Rock band Villanelle recently performed an intimate gig in Byker. If that name means nothing to you, then perhaps the lead singer’s surname rings some bells?

Yes, Liam Gallagher’s son, Gene Gallagher, and his bandmates took on the toon in November, maintaining a low profile and performing for an array of dodgy dad trims and miniskirts.

The crowd truly was an eclectic bunch: Nostalgic, middle-aged onlookers intrigued by the next-gen Gallagher, and the teenage girls desperate to get a look at the singer’s beautiful face.

Swaggering onstage with that ever-so-familiar nonchalance, the young Gallagher looked the spitting image of his dad. Singing with his head upwards towards the mic, a wonky stance and an unconcerned voice, the resemblance didn’t stop.

Liam has mentioned previously that Villanelle’s music takes on an “in your face, Arctic Monkey’s style” and Gene’s proclaimed Kurt Cobain as being his “hero”. Villanelle’s sound understandably then, echoes indie influences and Oasis, yet oozes out a grunge-rock tone, giving them an individual flare.

From comically ushering the audience to cheer, shouting out the bao buns he’d scranned for breakfast, to commenting on his bandmates “hunkiness”, he didn’t fail to humour the crowd either. A true rock’n’roll star…

You’ve got to give it to him, the lad clearly knows who he’s performing for by giving a solid rock performance to the older generation and a personality that swooning girls can attach to their Pinterest boards. As a result, the band was a hit, as the dodgy dad trims and miniskirts flocked to the merch-stand, where gene and his bandmates signed posters, sold t-shirts and took photos.

Speaking to everyone equally, he was casual, friendly and open, attracting pubgoers who hadn’t even been at the gig.

Being their first gig in the toon, Villanelle made a canny first impression with the Geordies.
