Here’s how Liverpool students supported the Movember Foundation this year

Get those ‘taches growing boys

Since the formation of the Movember Foundation in 2003, students across the world have recognised the month of November as dedicated to raising awareness of men’s health issues, largely shining a light on men’s struggles with mental health. Fundraising efforts, sponsored challenges and charity events are only some of the activities that staff, students and residents around Liverpool have been taking part in this month – including the iconic tradition of growing out a moustache in support of the foundation.

We looked far and wide to uncover some of the best fundraising efforts by Liverpool students this month, as sports teams and societies took part in Movember activities to shine a light on all things related to men’s health. And here’s what we found – along with a lot of beautiful mullets and moustaches, naturally.

Growing out that tache

This just had to be number one on our list. The tradition of growing out your moustache, mullet or facial hair to raise money for the Movember Foundation has to be the most iconic activity of the month. Societies, sports and companies across every university in Liverpool have taken part in the challenge of not shaving their taches for the whole thirty days of November, and have put so much effort in to generate donations for the charity. Good on you boys!

Cool It Liverpool’s Movember Bingo

Who doesn’t love a cheeky bingo? This month, Cool It Liverpool hosted a charity Movember Bingo in true Bongos Bingo style – with plenty of groovy dancing, outrageous singing and prizes to be won. The event at BOXPARK was a full house (in both senses of the word, excuse the pun) with lots of laughs, and raised funds directly for the Movember organisation. There’s just something about seeing hundreds of people in fancy dress raising money for charity that just warms your heart.

UoL FC’s 7-s-side Charity Tournament

On the 23rd of November, the University of Liverpool men’s football team held a 7-a-side football tournament that raised £25 per team for the Movember Foundation. The boys had been running a collective 60km throughout the month, whilst growing out their incredible moustaches, of course, as well as a 24 hour match in collaboration with the UoL women’s team. Everyone involved absolutely smashed it out of the park, all with the intention of “promoting open conversations about men’s mental health”.

UoL Water Polo’s cold water swim

Fancy taking on a cold water swim at the Liverpool Dock? Me neither, but the University of Liverpool’s Water Polo team are doing just that in aid of the cause for men’s mental health issues. With a fundraising target of £500 by the end of the month, these boys are aiming high and working even harder – I mean, look at those moustaches!

UoL Cycling and Triathlon’s 24-hour spin

The UoL cycling and triathlon teams are getting everyone involved on the 27th November for a 24 hour cycling spin outside the sport’s centre this week. You heard us right, a whole day’s worth of cycling on an exercise bike right on the Guild Walk. They’ll be getting their freshly-grown moustaches sweaty in support of the Movember Foundation, which has funded over 1,300 men’s health projects around the world. Cycling for a great cause – good luck everyone!

LJMU Rugby and Netball Charity Dinner

LJMU Rugby Union and Netball have a charity ball and dinner on the cards for the 30th November, featuring a three course meal and a fundraising raffle with all proceeds going straight to the foundation. With Hot Water Comedy Club vouchers and a signed Liverpool FC shirt up for grabs, it’s safe to say that they won’t be missing this one! Incredible efforts all round.

This is just a snapshot of the incredible efforts undergone around Liverpool to raise money for Movember – we could be here all day celebrating all the sports teams and societies getting involved this month! The city has outdone itself for Movember 2024, and it’s not too late to donate if you’re able to. Every penny counts to raise awareness for this amazing foundation! So grow that mo, or get moving, and don’t forget to congratulate everyone for hitting their fundraising goals. Well done!
