Family pays tribute to ‘inspirational’ Birmingham engineering student killed in shooting

‘His kindness, curiosity, and unwavering spirit touched hearts and created cherished memories that will forever resonate’

Family members have paid tribute to an “inspirational” Birmingham engineering student who was killed in a shooting last month.

Riyan Ali, 19, was discovered on Saturday 19th October at 10.30pm on Alderson Road with a serious gunshot wound to the head.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital but two days later, Riyan died from his injuries.

In an official statement released by Riyan’s family, they said: “His kindness, curiosity, and unwavering spirit touched hearts and created cherished memories that will forever resonate. He had a unique ability to uplift those around him, always ready with a smile or listening ear.”

“In honouring his spirit, let us celebrate the love he gave and the impact he made. He will forever be missed but never forgotten, living on in the stories, laughter and love shared by those he cherished most.”

His family continued by saying: “Though his time with us was far too short, his legacy of love, compassion and courage will endure in the hearts of his family. We will remember him not only for his achievements, but for the warmth he brought into our lives.

An inquest recently has been opened regarding Riyan’s death with Karen Jones, coroner’s investigator, stating: “In this case sadly the deceased did die a violent, unnatural death, therefore an inquest is required”

“An initial forensic post mortem examination has been undertaken by Dr Randall. This has confirmed the cause of death should be recorded as gunshot wound to the head.”

Faieq Ghazanfar, 19, was arrested on Monday, October 21, being charged with possessing firearms with intention to endanger life.

West Midlands Police are requesting those with information regarding this case to come forward. To remain anonymous, you can provide information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
