Cillian Murphy spotted in Birmingham for the new Peaky Blinders film

Filming for the new Peaky Blinders feature film has kicked off in Birmingham

Cillian Murphy, who infamously starred as Thomas Shelby in the hit BBC series Peaky Blinders, was spotted in Birmingham on Monday as production began for the new Peaky Blinders feature film.

The 48-year-old multi-award-winning actor was seen filming on Cornwall Street in his famous three-piece suit and jacket, wearing the classic flat cap, while on horseback. If there’s anything Tommy Shelby is known for, it’s his trademark flat cap, love of horses, and guns.

Murphy was spotted in discussion with director Steven Knight, the mastermind behind the incredible BBC show. The returning cast has yet to be confirmed; however, it is believed that many will be making the transition to the big screen. Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, and Tim Roth are set to join Cillian Murphy in the new movie.

Fans of the show attempted to get a sneak peak of the Irish star, with much anticipation for the upcoming film, which reports say will be released on Netflix.

Hayley Morris, a 19-year-old student and fan of Peaky Blinders, said: “The film crews have tried to keep it all hush hush but we all knew it was for Peaky Blinders.

“I’m so excited for the movie and hopefully we’ll get a glimpse of Cillian. It’s brilliant they are filming lots of it in Birmingham, as that’s where it’s all set.

“It can only be a good thing for the city. Peaky Blinders already brings us loads of tourists but now we have Hollywood stars here, it’s amazing.”

The gritty BBC series premiered in 2013, with the show continuing until 2022. The show followed the Shelbys, a gangster family from Birmingham in the 1900’s. Returning from the First World War, Thomas Shelby reaffirms his control over the city, battling with the police and various gangs. The film is expected to follow the Shelby family’s fortune a few years on and amid the Second World War.
