‘It ain’t over till it’s Dover’: Dover Castle to close at the end of October

One person described the closure as an end of an era

Dover Castle, a popular student pub near Guys campus, has announced it is permanently closing in early October.

Posting on Instagram, the pub said: “After 17 incredible years, our time at The Dover Castle is coming to an end. Our lease finishes in early October and we’ll be closing our doors.”

Students and locals took to the comments to express their disappointment with the news.”I feel like I’ve been shot,” one person commented under the announcement.

Speaking to The King’s Tab, one student said that Dover Castle was a great place to “just being able to gather with other sports teams.”

“Dover Castle was one of the only places where everyone ended up together. It didn’t matter what sport you played or what course you did – it was somewhere we could all unwind as one community.

“So many of my best memories happened there and losing Dover Castle feels like losing a huge part of the student experience. It’s heartbreaking to see it close.”

Dover Castle shouted out the KCL sports teams that frequently went to the pub, thanking them “for the memories” and making it “their home.”

The pub was popular particularly among sports societies, being so close to Guy’s campus, and was a common place for socials. GKT netball, Guys hospital rugby club and KCL Women’s football club, were also among those upset by the news.

The pub will remain open for a few more weeks, hinting at a possible last night send off, with more details to be announced soon.

While it may be over for Dover, there is still a wide variety of places for KCL students to go on a night out, such as Guy’s bar or The Vault.
