All the ways you can spot a Warwick first year student

Don’t forget to bring your lanyard

Warwick Welcome Week: An exhilarating, exploratory time filled with, of course, a new class of freshers attempting to make their way through the world of university life. Warwick first years are vivacious and obvious, whether they’re putting on their society hoodies, getting lost en route to Oculus, or joining every club under the sun.

After a certain amount of time a recognisable pattern gets established and helps you spot a fresher from a mile away. These first years are struggling to figure everything out while still trying to keep their cool, making them adorable and oh so sweet.

But, if you are a fresher at Warwick do not worry as you’re not alone. Here are all the signs to help you spot a fellow fresher out and about!

The fresh lanyard flash

One of the quickest ways to spot a fresher is the lanyard around their neck containing their fob and student ID. These lanyards are hung constantly around their necks and worn as a badge of honour. Trust me, it’s fine to have a lanyard phase but it’s one of the quickest giveaways to find a fresher for the seasoned students.

The Instagram Stories of the Piazza and the FAB

First years will constantly post stories when they arrive at Warwick, and we can bet most of them will feature lounging at the Piazza, grabbing a drink from Curiositea, or capturing moments at the iconic FAB.

Everything from The Library to their first POP! will be documented and posted for everyone to see. They’re eager to share every new experience, no matter how ordinary it may seem to the older students.

The confused Circling newbie

A quick and easy way to point out a first year is when they attend their first circle. They’ll probably be the ones looking bewildered, appalled at what everyone is dressed in and perplexed by what to say next when the social sec yells “BLACK, BLACK, WHITE” in their face. You’ll see them constantly glancing around for guidance and hesitating when it’s their turn to speak or drink. For them, circling is a confusing initiation into the world of Warwick’s social life. They’re not wrong though.

FOMO

FOMO is probably the feeling first years are going to feel the most. First years are always trying to do every single thing they possibly can – whether it’s a POP!, a society event, quiz at the Dirty Duck or a party. They are terrified to miss out on any opportunity to socialise and make friends so an easy way to seek out a fellow fresher is if they have the look of FOMO on their face.

Bright eyed in lecture halls

First years are the ones sitting front and centre in lecture halls, start typing before the lecturer has even spoken a word of substance and note down every single thing. They’re the ones standing outside the lecture hall 20 minutes early and showing up having done the further reading as well. However, this habit doesn’t last too long.

At the end of the day, everyone at Warwick was once a first year and whether you like it or not this is a rite of passage. The getting lost en route to a lecture, the confusion of Circling, the documenting of every moment on Instagram and the feeling of excitement are things every fresher has faced. While older students may be able to spot a fresher from a mile away, it’s all a part of the journey!

So, embrace your lanyards and all of the other quirks that come with being a fresher because soon enough it’ll be you spotting next year’s new batch of freshers. Welcome to Warwick !
