Everything going on with Norme right now, the live streamer who tried to stay awake for 12 days
He had a welfare visit from the police, and experts branded it ‘utter madness’
Australian YouTuber known as Norme is currently attempting to stay awake for 12 days straight – to break the world record for the longest any human has ever stayed awake for. Whilst it would break the world record, this has not been endorsed and would not be recognised by the Guinness World Records, who deem it irresponsibly dangerous. YouTube has since shut off Norme as he live streamed trying to stay awake due to welfare concerns, and he has had a visit from the police after concerned viewers called the authorities. Norme has 1.2 million subscribers on Youtube.
During his stream, Norme has been trying to stay awake through various methods – mostly helped by his brother. His brother has distracted him with video games and splashing cold water on him every time Norme would get super tired. Norme did the attempt with no stimulants – so no caffeine. And no “bumpin’ that” but that goes without saying.
Norme sleeps again while everyone is telling them to call the police and even his friend admitted in stream that he doesn’t like keeping him awake😭‼️ pic.twitter.com/B4l7IVYfcu

Things took the inevitable turn for the worse and police were called after Norme started having hallucinations, losing consciousness and becoming totally incoherent. Norme had some of his massive following trying to find out his address as he attempted to stay awake so they could send medical professionals to help him.
On August 11th, Norme said how YouTube had ended the live stream just 12 hours off his goal of beating the world record, writing “I got banned from YouTube. Literally 12 hours from goal istg [I swear to God] crying rn [right now].”

Dr Deborah Lee, of Fox Online Pharmacy, said to the Daily Star of the stunt “I think this is utter madness. If you want to kill yourself, this is a miserable, protracted way to do it. There is a very rare, genetically inherited condition called fatal insomnia.
“Once insomnia sets in, the average life expectancy is three months to three years. There is no cure. Why would anyone of a sane mind want to put themselves through something similar? After all, what’s nicer than climbing into your lovely bed every night and snuggling down and drifting off to sleep? It’s not just a necessity, it’s one of life’s pleasures.”
The risks of trying to stay awake like Norme did are VAST – there’s a reason why the Guinness World Record want nothing to do with it. He literally could have died. Risks after staying awake for too long a time include:
- Reduced reaction time.
- Slurred speech.
- Impaired judgment and decision-making.
- Diminished memory and attention.
- Irritability.
- Impaired vision, hearing and hand-eye coordination.
- Tremors and muscle tension.
The current world record holder for longest time staying awake was 17 year old Randy Gardner, who stayed awake for 11 days and 24 minutes between December 1963 and January 1964. He said it gave him insomnia for 50 years.
the norme situation is insane because we learn about shit like this in 100 level psych classes. sleep deprivation kills, it can literally kill you 3 days in from having a heart attack.
also the world record books no longer accept sleep deprivation records because of the danger.— annika (@harmonicdnp) August 12, 2024
Social media has been notably unsupportive of what Norme tried to do. A bit of sense, finally. Norme has since announced he has been banned from Twitch.
