‘The French lad took me down’: Team GB athlete got into a scrap with rival on finish line
An expert lip reader has now revealed exactly what they yelled at each other
Some major drama went down between Team GB athletics athlete George Mills and his French rival Hugo Hay at the Olympics this morning, after the pair collided on the final straight of the men’s 5,000m heat.
George Mills and Hugo Hay bumped into each other, bringing three other runners down and leaving George in 18th place whilst Hugo placed seventh. And whilst we could see they were having some serious words, the mic couldn’t pick up what was said between the pair. But now, an expert lipreader has revealed exactly what they were yelling at each other.

Moments after George Mills crossed the Olympics finish line he made a beeline for Hugo Hay and started pushing and yelling at him. Following the race, George explained what he thought happened, telling the BBC: “I think it’s pretty clear. I got stepped out on. I was about to kick into the straight and boom – the French lad took me down.
“I was like, ‘Nobody in this field can run away from me at this pace’, so I was just sitting, waiting, biding my time, gonna kick off the home straight then bang, hit the deck. What can you do?”
His competitor Hugo Hay was not disqualified and didn’t think he pushed George over, explaining: “I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel anything. I was surprised that George came to see me after the race, because I didn’t feel anything, well, no more than usual.

“It pushed in the last 400m, it was really a massacre. I turned around, there was no one left. It was incredible. I have no idea what’s going to happen, it scares me. For me, it happened clearly. That’s what I said to George. If I’m guilty, sorry, but I think I was pushed. I don’t think I did anything wrong, but it scares me a little bit.
“I hope it works out and that I can get into the final. If the protest ever goes through and I’m eliminated, of course, it will hurt but I know that I had the level to qualify and that I’ve never been so strong. For me, I am qualified, that is the most important thing. We are at very high speeds, so of course, the slightest contact throws you off balance.
“I was pushed two years ago and I was really angry after the line. That’s what I told the others, I understand George’s reaction, of course. There’s the adrenaline, the disappointment. He was very angry, he said a few sweet words to me and that it was because of me that they had fallen.
Expert lipreader Jeremy Freeman told Mail Sport that on his way to approaching Hugo, George pointed at him and yelled: “You f*cking clown.” After Hugo insists that he “didn’t push” the Team GB athlete, George shouted back: “You f*cking did. Yes, you did.” Hugo then replied: “No it was not me”, before telling George, “Ah, come on.”
The British Athletics Association have announced that George will still be able to take part in the final despite his placing due to the fall.
