It’s official: Katy Perry’s 143 is the worst reviewed album since 2011
It’s the ninth worst reviewed album of all time and lowest ever by a female artist
Katy Perry has broken a few records with her new album 143 – but likely not the ones she was hoping for. After the album received scathing reviews upon release on Friday, review aggregator Metacritic has declared the score after examining the reviews, and Katy Perry has received the worst reviewed album since 2011 with 143. It’s truly a bleak state of affairs for a pop star who spent so many years at the top.
Metacritic decreed 143 by Katy Perry to get a woeful score of 34 – based on 10 reviews from critics. Of those 10 reviews, six gave it a mixed to negative reception and four gave it purely negative. This has meant that Katy Perry now has the lowest scoring album not just of her career, but of all albums on Metacritic since way back in 2011. 143 by Katy Perry is the worst reviewed album by a female artist of all time on Metacritic, and the ninth worst reviewed album of all time. Huge, huge yikes.
Some of the most savage reviews of 143 came from The Independent on Friday, with the paper saying Perry’s “once great commitment to the genre has been “replaced by a weariness (or perhaps wariness) of the industry she once dominated. Most songs here have an underlying hesitance, too preoccupied by their commercial aspirations to have any real fun.”

The Guardian said “Commercially disastrous singles, online furore, being branded pop’s leading menace to the sand dunes of S’Espalmador, all in the space of a month. Were you Katy Perry, you might well consider just packing your comeback in, cancelling your forthcoming album and going home to quietly enjoy the fruits of the 100m-plus records you’ve already sold. After all, while it’s not guaranteed that a pop album preceded by two flop singles is a turkey, it’s 99% certain.”
