Here’s why people think Netflix’s documentary ruined KATSEYE’s reputation as a girl group
'It scares me for the girls'
It’s been a whole year since KATSEYE starred in Netflix‘s Popstar Academy series, and with it came a whole lot of negative reviews. There’s no doubt it was entertaining, but people think it ruined the girl group’s entire reputation because of the show’s editing.
Basically, for people who have followed the group for years, they feel anyone who became a fan of KATSEYE from the show will have certain narratives they feel wrongly represent them. One person said that Netflix viewers will think Lara and Sophia are mean girls.
They added that people will assume “Manon is untalented and doesn’t deserve to debut, the girls don’t like each other and the company uses the girls for drama.” However, the common discourse is that this isn’t necessarily the case, and that the documentary skewed it.
People are even calling for the documentary to be removed. Someone wrote: “New fans that watched it will feel defensive over Manon. Which is why I’m not shocked the fans were super protective of her and made this “mistreatment” thing blow up.”
Basically, band member Manon was in the back of the debut choreography for KATSEYE, which led to loads of backlash, as people thought the girls weren’t being fair to her. However, some people claim they “love the girls more” after the Netflix show.
Many feel the documentary “portrayed Manon in a certain light” while one person wrote: “It’s irritating me how solos and token stans have taken over eyekon spaces to push their own agendas onto the group. Certain accs are expecting Manon to leave the group.”
Most defences say Manon was in the back due to final formation changes, but her perceived lack of talent and absences from performances due to injury and illness have contributed to negative perceptions about when the group was first formed.
